The Boys (and Girls) are Back in Town
David Poland has geared up the Gurus o' Gold again over at Movie City News for a quick look from afar. This made for a nice look at what industry folks were predicting last year during the Oscar race, and a decent break from the prognostication that is so popular amongst the tenacious fanworld of Oscarland.
Personally I'm surprised anyone still thinks "Babel" can be seen as appealing enough throughout the Academy to garner a Best Picture nomination, but most of us agree that "Dreamgirls" and "World Trade Center" are shaping up to be great bets, while "The Good German" is on the fence for me, and "Flags of Our Fathers" (to round out the Gurus' top five) has become something of a question mark in my view as time has passed.

I'm really confused as to why "The Departed" is so high.
Are these people so lauded by the name of "Martin Scorsese" that they fail see how crappy the trailer is?
Seriously, take away the "A Martin Scorsese Film" text and suddenly, it's just another mediocre (and forgettable) remake of a foreign movie.

I'm with you, and I forgot to mention that. "The Departed" is going to be a fun nuts and bolts movie, but for some reason prognosticators expect this thing to come from a Midas touch or some such nonsense. No wonder Marty disappoints so many people. They expect the second coming every time he directs a film. And this is an enthusiastic fan of "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator" talking.

i'm surprised anne thompson put united 93 as 1, and then when i saw she put babel at 2 i thought she was a little ridiculous...and then little miss sunshine at 4...come on.
i don't think it's ridiculous to put the departed so high...i kind of see it as this years "The Green Mile." The movie that makes it just because.
I was surprised to see Breaking and Entering so low.
I was surprised to see Queen so high, and where is the Good Shepherd?
