"Last King," "Pan's," "Queen" Win Big At BAFTA
And Alan Arkin won Best Supporting Actor? Food...for...thought. "Little Miss Sunshine" also won Best Original Screenplay.
I usually steer clear of this awards body. Not a lot of excitement for my taste. But at least "The Last King of Scotland" landed three big awards. "Pan's Labyrinth" also took home three, while "Children of Men," "Little Miss Sunshine," "The Queen," and "United 93" claimed two apiece.

Arkin was the only Oscar nominee also nominated at the BAFTAs. He didn't beat Murphy.

Which means...nothing.
I Arkin can pull off a win over Michael Sheen, he's in good position with the Academy too, which has a pretty sizeable British contingent/

I agree he can pull an upset. It is very possible, however, that they awarded Arkin because of his Oscar status. Clearly they weren't into awarding The Queen everything, or it would've won a couple other awards. Arkin's win might be entirely due to his status as the leading Oscar contender of these nominees. It's just trick to draw a conclusion when Murphy isn't in the running. I'd say LMS's screenplay win is far more telling (about Arkin's chances as well).

Agreed.

I was surprised by the Arkin win. But the BAFTAs always have a few of these surprises. I don't think he'll win at the Oscars, though. If he had won at the SAG, I think I would be more convinced.
