Martin Scorsese wins the DGA
Stunning! Surprising! Scandalous! Shocking! Surely not!!!
Moving on...
Other winners of the evening included Arunas Matelis for the documentary "Before Flying Back to Earth," in something of an upset over Amy Berg's "Deliver Us From Evil." Walter Hill took home the win for television's "Broken Trail," while Jon Cassar and Richard Shepherd won television series awards for "24" and "Ugly Betty" respectively.
EDITED TO ADD (11:03): Variety now has a briefing up (time-stamped at about twenty minutes earlier than the story ACTUALLY went up, mind you).

Also, Rob Marshall is now a two-time DGA winner. Odd, but true.

Call it wishful thinking, but I think Scorsese is pretty much a lock for a win. Unlike 2002 and 2004, where he was honestly outdirected and would have won just cause he was due -- this yr. he has every precursor and his film warrants it (though it's not his best, the other competition in my opinion, makes him even more deserving than when he should have won for "raging bull" and "goodfellas".)
clint eastwood is considered the dark horse, but i don't see him winning a 3rd time, though i can see "letters" winning best film. i actually think Innaritu is his closest competetor as i think "Babel" will undeservingly win best picture a-la "Crash" and unlike the latter, "Babel" clearly has that director's feel. especially this yr. in which they seem to love hyperreality filmmakers (i.e. paul greengrass' lone director's slot).

also, a lot of scorsese's two best films, "taxi driver" and "raging bull" feature two of the best screenplays ever composed. i think their greatness is more a tribute to paul schrader and robert deniro.
monohan's screenplay is fun, but scorsese's vision and pacing makes the film the masterpiece it is.
