The Day in Guilds

curse.jpg

Lots of movement today. "Dreamgirls" missed out with the CDG only to pick up the CAS minutes later. Big wins for "Curse of the Golden Flower" and "Pan's Labyrinth."

ART DIRECTORS GUILD

Contemporary:
"Casino Royale," Peter Lamont

Fantasy:
"Pan's Labyrinth," Eugenio Caballero

Period:
"Curse of the Golden Flower," Huo Tingxiou

The first of two big wins for "Pan's" today, and one of two surprising victories for "Curse." This race really is up in the air, and honestly, judging one's predictions based on what the guild saw as award-worthy might be a bit foolhardy. This Oscar is no more "Pan's" than it is any of the other nominees'. We'll see how it plays out.

CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY

"Dreamgirls," Michael Minkler, Bob Beemer, Willie D. Burton

We're still likely looking at our Oscar winner, but Academy members still have a soft spot for war films. Watch out for "Flags."

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD

Contemporary:
"The Queen," Consolata Boyle

Fantasy:
"Pan's Labyrinth," Lala Huerte

Period:
"Curse of the Golden Flower," Chung Man Yee

Gotta say no shocks there, as "Curse" might have upset "Dreamgirls," but really, it's been the musical's competition for the Oscar since day one. "Prada" was destined to miss this boat to "The Queen," and who didn't think "Pan's" would reign in fantasy?

Comments

I want you to consider three things before giving us your final predictions.

1. Find out if you can how many academy members actually know Kevin O'Connell and about his losing streak.
2. Look at the CAS losing streak. I wouldn't consider Dreamgirls even the frontrunner to win the oscar after this.
3. When predicting Art Direction, note that John Myhre has two oscars on his mantle now, and if the guild can't give him two, the oscars most likely won't give him three.

1) Not many know of Kevin ad Greg's plight and, to boot, the ballot doesn't have the tech craftsmen's names next to the films. It'll just say "Apocalypto" for best Sound.

2) It is foolish to follow trends in a year like this.

3) the Academy at large doesn't know how many Oscars John Myhre has, if they even really know WHO he is. All they know is they thought Chicago and Memoirs had great art direction. Could easily be the same for Dreamgirls.
