2007 Wrap-up: THE IN CONTENTION OSCAR BALLOT
Per annual tradition around these parts, today I offer up my personal Oscar ballot – an “if I were an Academy member” sort of thing. Plus the usual addition of a category the AMPAS really needs to go ahead and add to their ceremony already: Best Ensemble Performance.
Stay tuned Friday for the denouement, a list of personal award winners in each of these categories and more. And check out the top ten list in case you missed it. Also, SAG predictions will hit later this evening.

Comments
This is kind of a bizarre category to comment on, but I'm really happy to see "Le Festin" in your Best Original Song nominees. Great song from a fantastic movie.

only three songs? did you hear about a little film called Once? ther's 3 songs in that movie alone worthy of a nomination!

I stick with the Academy's usual designations here, so, three nominees. And "Falling Slowly" is my #4. So it goes...

This is why I dig your lists. You're fiercely individualist. As am I. Fabulous to see some truly great acting that has (sadly) been ignored this entire awards season: Brad, Sam & Sienna. Always ecstatic to see the powerful & charismatic Ms. Cotillard in the mix. (But what...? No Julie???) Well done as always...

You snubbed Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood? Surprising. I thought his score was miles beyond anyone else's this year. Truly innovative brilliance that challenges convention. And beautiful, as well.

Ruby: THAT was a major oversight on my part that I will ammend immediately. Thank you.

I'd say Keegan DeWitt's score for Quiet City also deserves a mention. The epitome of less is more.
Also, on the topic of "Falling Slowly". How is it that the Academy can disqualify Moulin Rouge's "Come What May" for being originally written for yet unused in Romeo + Juliet but they have no problem with this, a track that has appeared on TWO albums previous to the films soundtrack?

if jonny greenwood doesn't win the oscar, then there will be tears. out of all your nominees, he is the most deserving relative to the others in his category (imho).

Benicio was fantastic is TWLITF. Too bad the film tank. I thought it was quite good.

Chad, All the "Once" songs were written for "Once", but since the film has taken so long to be released the songs were subsequently released elsewhere. "Come What May" was written for a different film altogether.
I like the rundown Kris, but I must call foul on Casey Affleck in supporting actor. If he isn't a co-lead then who is?

Oh, and didn't you see Hairspray? Odd that it didn't show up once even in the techs.

Yeah I saw it. Unimpressive I felt, though it would have come close in costume design and art direction. A fat suit doesn't equal Best Makeup to me, though. Nor do a bunch of wigs.

Wow, I love how you have so much love for Jesse James - I hope they get that much support in noms. I know you did not like No Country, but I think it will get more noms (esp for Direction and maybe Adapted Screenplay???).
The best 2 scores of the year are easily There Will Be Blood and Jesse James.

I really don't see Casey Affleck as supporting at all but maybe I'm off. Did he not ave as much screen time as Pitt. In my opinion he totally out-acted him as well, although Pitt was as good as he's ever been.
Also James Newton Howard's 'The Lookout' score is the best I've heard in a few years. Absolutely love it and can't stop listening to it. Wish people would give it a mention. Only the Golden Satellites have done so and I have no idea who they are!

"A fat suit doesn't equal Best Makeup to me, though. Nor do a bunch of wigs."
But isn't that all La Vie en Rose had? A bunch of wigs and "old person" makeup? Don't get me wrong, I thought the makeup work on BOTH were fine, I just don't get having one and not the other when they're fairly similar.
