Couple of things...
1) Gerard's latest "Tech Support" column will hit this weekend, an interview piece with compsers Dario Marianelli and Mark Isham.
2) With the massive amount of critics awards announcements coming this week, I've decided to hold the top 10/end of the year column until next Monday, Dec. 17. I have it ready to go now, but I'd prefer it not be buried underneath the week's activity.

Kris,
Like yourself, I wasn't crazy about No Country For Old Men. Yet it's already won Best Picture from the NBR, and now the Boston group.
What am I missing??
I thought this was a very average film overall, with a few terrific individual aspects. I still don't see it winning the Best Picture at the Oscars. I really don't think it's the Academy's type of film (like Brokeback Mountain).
Thoughts??
Please enlighten me. What does everyone else love so much about this film, that apparently, was completely lost on me ?? Is this the same crowd of people that thought Miller's Crossing was so wonderful??

Well I don't think your top ten will be buried under everything else. Why? Because it's no secret that number one won't be No Country, which might not even be on your list seeing as you thought Enchanted was better. Not that I think it's bad you don't like No Country.

"Not that I think it's bad you don't like No Country."
Clearly.
Paddy, I have no thoughts, because I've seen "No Country" a couple of times now and I simply think it comes in well below the marks critics have it set for. I don't get the love fest because of how woefully unqualified the directors appear to be waxing on and on about such old men troubles. I've talked to massive fans of the film that agree with this assessment, but they chalk it up to an ode to Cormac McCarthy, the Coens as a vessle for his prose. Fair enough, but the film could have been a masterpiece if they held off maybe ten years. They're geniuses now, but the material wasn't matched properly with them yet, in my opinion.
The sad thing is the people out there who can't stand an against the grain assessment, who get personal and seem overly peeved at someone who doesn't like a film loved en masse...like our friend AJ here. But such is life. I like what I like -- that's kind of all I can do.

Me, peeved? HAHAHA! I thought No Country was worse than you thought! I was just making an observation about how No Country would sweep almost everything and that your list would stand out because it wouldn't be on it. However LAFCA has proved me wrong, so hold off the week.

Oh, then my apologies. I didn't discern that over the web clearly enough, I guess.
Anyway, yeah, No Country coming up short with LA is a big deal. It also missed with NYFCO. Interesting, given that group's typically "geeky" nature.
