A year in advance...
Looking back over my year in advance predictions (the chats of which can be found here and here), the only Best Picture nominee I forecasted was -- believe it or not -- "Michael Clayton." I nailed George Clooney and Daniel Day-Lewis in the Best Actor arena, Cate Blanchett in Best Actress and Javier Bardem in Best Supporting Actor.
Elsewhere: "Atonement," "There Will Be Blood," "Michael Clayton" and "The Savages" for screenplay, "Ratatouille" for Best Animated Film (duh), and 13 other nods throughout the tech categories. So, 23 total correct guess 11 months ago. Is that good? Probably not, we're all shooting blind at that point.
Which reminds me, this year's year-in-advance coverage will land on February 25, the day after the Oscars, as usual. That's right, we think ahead 'round these parts.
Comments
I got 36 right. I got 3/5 correct, yet I was predicting Michael Clayton, There Will Be Blood, and Atonement in the beginning of April.
I did better back in April in Art Direction 4/5, than I did now, 3/5. I also went 4/5 in actress now and 4/5 back in April, actually predicting Laura Linney back then. When I do better in art direction 10 months ago than now, I wonder why I even bother updating my predictions.

As far as next year... I'm going to say (I've been saying for two years now) that "Romulus, My Father" may be a player as it's finally getting a US release. The trailer looks solid and there have been several AFI (Australian Film Institute) winners that have gone on to do well at the Oscars (Shine, The Piano, etc). I'm hoping for at least Eric Bana to be recognized if he is as good as he looks and it sounds.
Also, I called it before his death, but Heath Ledger will at least be nominated for Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight, if not win.
And I'll say "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" might be where David Fincher finally gets his due. And Cate Blanchett will be recognized for it or something.
But I'll shut-up for now!

I think a lot of people "called it before his death," McAllister. It isn't exactly the most unpopular opinion of things, certainly not around these parts. But we'll see how things go. Ultimately I have to say, I hope it's the work and not the memory people find themselves responding to.

I wasn't saying "I called it before his death" so I can lay claim to the fact... I was saying that I saw the potential for a nominated performance before it became his last. I know that others were thinking it too.
