Charts Updated
Check the sidebar for updated predictions charts. All races are currently ranked as I see them right now.
This is just an early stab, kind of a gut feeling to start, and we'll analyze as we go. But I have to say, I expect this to be a brutal, ugly phase two from the PR and marketing perspective. Seriously. And the #1 and #2 films could just as easily cannibalize each other as a result, making way for "Juno" or, my real pick for a threat, "Michael Clayton."
Predicted winners are also indicated in the sidebar with asterisks.
Let the games begin.

I don't know if you've had a chance to see the documentary shorts. I've seen 3 of them (missing La Corona). Of those three, I see Freeheld easily taking the prize. It is easily the most draining and compelling of all the films. Very depressing. That's what these people love, of course. Sari's Mother is another depressing film, but it lacks the story Freeheld has. The ending leaves you rather cold. Salim Baba is beautifully shot, a nice little story, but it sure doesn't feel like the winner in the category.
I have trouble believing the Coens brothers will win in all 4 categories. It just seems a little too much.

Kris, Sweeney didn't make it in makeup. It's a different story on the sidebar. Thought you'd want to know. :)

Thanks for the correction.

Last year, I just had a feeling about Alan Arkin in the supporting actor category, and I decided to go with it in my Oscar pools. I'm getting a similar strong feeling with Hal Holbrook this year.
Also, right now I like Diving Bell in the cinematography category, Atonement in Best Costume, and Sweeney Todd in the Art Direction category.
I'm pretty much in agreement with you on everything else.
Also, if a film just plain sucks like Transformers, the Academy should find a way to disqualify it. They disqualify good films, and ground breaking scores, so why not disqualify a film from contention for just being plain bad.

Because there is a hell of a lot of expert craft work going on in the categories where it was nominated, and it would be disrespectful not to recognize that. Obviously.

I've posted my analysis of the nominations on my blog (http://colorbylogic.blogspot.com). I was with Kris all year regarding Jesse James. It deserved way more than it got!

I sure hope the Coens don't win in ALL FOUR CATEGORIES. Please Academy... give PTA an Oscar somewhere.
