EXCLUSIVE: ‘True Grit’ teaser poster

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:00 am · October 1st, 2010

A mesmerizing teaser trailer for the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” hit the web Monday, ratcheting up the anticipation further. Today Paramount has offered us an exclusive first look at the teaser poster for the film, a striking, minimalist, wanted poster-esque assemblage that looks like it would make a handsome book cover.  There will be a secondary poster down the line that I imagine will be more traditional.  Have a look at the full image after the jump.

Good for a teaser, though would’ve preferred it be just a tad grittier, no pun intended really.

I agree, I little dirtier would’ve been better…but it still looks pretty good…

Didn’t the teaser poster for “The Wrestler” look very similar to this??

There was a faux wrestling “ad” that was floating around Toronto, but it was never an “official” teaser poster.

Very nice, I love the idea, but I do agree it could’ve been made to look more authentic. The typography is way too clean, too “straight from Illustrator”.

Love this — I love the subtle touch of the bullet hole with blood dripping down. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE.

I cannot disagree more with the takes above.

The poster need not be any dirtier – the cleanliness that you all refer to only serves to aplify the contrast between the “paper” and the bullet hole/blood. Keeping the lool clean safe for that foreign element was the right decision.

Moreover, this kind of subversiveness has always been key to Coen’s work. Everything isn’t quite as it seems and nothing is ever that obvoious. Ahem…

All that said, as I was about to scroll down to see the enitre poster, my eyes fell on the top portion containing the pointing fingers along with the line “punishment / comes one way or another” and I laughed.

Please tell me that I am not the only way who got a strong Monty Pythonesque vibe from that part. Now what was that we heard about “True Grit” being a dark comedy?

Let me try that part once again:

“serves to amplify the contrast between the “paper” and the bullet hole/blood. Keeping the look clean save for that one foreign element was the right decision.

This film really jumped back on my radar. And why shouldn’t it? Coen Brothers directing an old school, yet gritty western starring The Dude, MATT DAMON, and Josh Brolin who can play scum in his sleep sounds too good to be true. After all, A Serious Man was also one of my favorites of last year as well. I guess I just needed to see a trailer.

But… it’s up on impawards.com. Is it really “exclusive?”

It was propagated after 9:00am today by those picking it up here, so, yes. (IMP sources us, by the way.)

It reminds me of the book cover that was given to “True Grit” when it was reprinted a couple of months ago in anticipation for the movie.

Alright, Jeremy. I went to see “The Social Network” this evening and I got a glimpse of the full trailer for “True Grit”. Granted I only saw it once, it wasn’t as good as the teaser. I can’t help but feel like Joel and Ethan Coen have something of a disappointment on their hands. It doesn’t look nearly as good as “No Country for Old Men”, and I don’t think it will be as huge an awards presence as originally thought.

I know she’s not a “name,” but she’s kind of the central character, so would it have killed someone (or some piece of bleeding paper) to get Hailee Steinfeld’s name on this poster?

Yes, it’s rather odd — it’s as if that bloody bullet hole by Brolin’s name is where they took her out. Not even a nice old-fashioned “and introducing” credit?

    Great-looking poster, though.

@Pete – Well I’ve actually seen the full trailer and that struck me as something that didn’t stand that great a chance at getting nominated. It actually looks like one of weakest and most traditional film the Coens have ever done, and I like the more non-traditional work they’ve done with “A Serious Man” and “No Country for Old Men”.
