The International Documentary Association has revealed it’s list of nominees for documentary filmmaking in four categories.  From the press release:

Winners will be feted on December 3rd at the Directors Guild Theater in Los Angeles in a ceremony hosted by award-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.

“This has been another banner year for documentary films,” said IDA Executive Director Michael Lumpkin, “and that is reflected in our list of nominees. Entries to the Awards increased by nearly 20% this year, and the quality of the films vying for recognition is unprecedented.”

Lumpkin also announced that for the first time two of the awards – for Distinguished Feature and Short Documentary – will be selected by IDA’s members through an innovative process in which members who wish to participate will view all of the nominated films in these categories through a secure, password-protected online system. After viewing all of the films in their entirety, these IDA member judges will cast their votes to determine the winners.

Were some of the higher profile docs eligible? Superman, Client 9, Inside Job, Tillman Story?

So far “Exit Through the Gift Shop” is the only doc I’ve seen this year and it was really good. I’m happy to see it here, and hope it makes its way to a nomination come January (or is it February?)

Yay, Banksy! Loved “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. Too bad it won’t get an Oscar nomination.

Lmfao, the Joan Rivers comment is genius… But seriously, not really critical fare, but A Piece of Work was actually really entertaining!

    “Steam of Life”. Sweet!

I’ve only seen The Oath, but I’m glad that at least got one mention this year before it almost surely gets overshadowed by the more high profile picks this year. It’s a much more subtle and nuanced examination of a major contemporary issue (terrorism) as opposed to the ones that really beat you over the head with its more typical activist spirit (Inside Job, Waiting for Superman, etc.).

Thank you Lucas, I’m glad you enjoyed it!! Here’s hoping that Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, **available on DVD December 14th** will refresh the Academy voters how much they love, er loathe me ;-)

“Restrepo”? Or the Tillman doc? This year seamed to be stacked with big name documentaries, and Gift Shop is the only one I really recognize.
