As much as I love De Niro, I’m worried that a look back at his career, especially if they do a montage of film clips or stills, will only serve to highlight the disappointing trajectory of his professional choices. Nevertheless, I love the guy and he’s given more than enough great performances to make up for the latter-day missteps. My only wish is that, in addition to showcasing his turns as Bickle and LaMotta, they’ll devote at least a moment or two to Rupert Pupkin. A great performance in a great film, both of which only recently seem to be getting the respect they deserve.
Anybody else notice this award hasn’t gone to a woman since 2000?
How predictable and boring, of course he deserves it, but will they ever award a woman for a change? It’s been 11 years since they did that.
Can’t argue with this choice. De Niro is a most deserving winner. I also think that while he has certainly been a part of a number of films that were beneath him in the last couple of decades the same could be said for his earlier career as well.
More importantly though, De Niro doesn’t seem to be given recognition for all the good movies he has done lately. The man never stopped experementing and I am very happy he is getting this award. Kind of hard to believe it’s taken this long, honestly.
I’d like to think it’s not intentional, Guy. And who knows, maybe after we wait another 11 years, they will give the award to Madonna.
In all seriousness though, I have a hard time understanding the attitudes of people like Will. Have the MTV movie awards not satisfied his hunger for highturnover obscuirty?
Movie’s greats:
Julie Andrews
Angela Lansbury
Meryl Streep
Debbie Reynolds
Jane Fonda
Olivia de Havilland
Glenn Close
Maggie Smith
Jeanne Moreau
Gena Rowlands
TV’s greats:
Betty White
Carol Burnett
Mary Tyler Moore
Tell me they are not deserving to receive one.
High turnover obscurity? What does that even mean and how does it pertain to Will’s point?
Obviously it’s not intentional to have snubbed women for over a decade. It’s negligent, though.
Gotta agree. Boring choice. And though he’s great, he hasn’t done anything of great worth in a very long time. As Will said, so many deserving women. I’d call out Gena Rowlands, personally.
They never even gave one to Katharine Hepburn who was nominated for a GG six times. Most of those women on Will’s list will not receive this award.

That’s for sure. I think Meryl Streep and Julie Andrews are the only one who can actually get one at this point. I believe that Lucille Ball was the only TV star they have ever awarded.
And it’s not only HFPA. AMPAS are the same. Until last year when Lauren Bacall finally got one there have been no Honorary Oscar female recipients in 14 years.
So far only nine women have been recognized for their cinematic contributions with The Academy Honorary Award: Greta Garbo (1955), Lillian Gish (1971), Mary Pickford (1976), editor Margaret Booth (1978), Barbara Stanwyck (1982), Myrna Loy (1991), Sophia Loren (1991), Deborah Kerr (1994) and Bacall (2009) out of I don’t how many recipients.
This year all four awards went to men again.
Well, if you MUST know then tell me, what is Will’s point, exacty?
Is it the notion that just because this year’s recepeint is a male the whole thing was “boring and predictable” (the attitude I said I couldn’t understand) or is there more to it? And if we were to go that route, it”s not like the same claim couldn’t easily be made about the names on Will’s list.
In case it is not clear, I was in no way implying that there are no deserving female candidates for the award. It’s not like I am applauding HFPA for neglegence. All words of praise were derected striclty at the recipient. The irony is that we don’t even disagree that much on that issue.
It’s funny that Clint Eastwood received one in 1988.
Obviously De Niro is deserving, but I’m surprised they haven’t given one to Meryl Streep by now. Maybe they feel it’s more rude to the women to honor them before they’re extremely old. Who knows. When thinking of other older women who are still acting but haven’t been given this award, my thoughts briefly turned to Diane Keaton. But then I also realized that Woody Allen hasn’t received the award either, so the point became moot.
If Guy Lodge really cared about women in the industry he’d change his name. It’s gotta be a pseudonym anyway.
It does look pretty bad that there hasn’t been a female recipient in so long. DeNiro is as deserving as they come, but so is Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton and a multitude of other actresses in the “right” age bracket (most recipients seem to be in their 60s).
A lot of actors who have won the DeMille award lately has had directing experience.
If memory serves, the last female receipient was Streisand, who is DGA award nominee. Beatty won an Oscar. DeNiro directed a big film relatively recently. Maybe they are just drawn to people who had this kind of experience. Makes sense too, considering who the award is named after.
All I am saying that there might be more to HFPA logic than may seem at first.
I said that Robert De Niro is boring and predictable choice, because he really was the most obvious candidate to receive it this year. Every other American superstar of his generation got one already, he was the only one who was left. I personally predicted him. Was thinking Morgan Freeman at first, but then it was announced that he’s the next AFI Award recipient, so I knew he’s out of the running.
The HFPA is spending all their time creating a drug that will speed up the aging process so that they can inject it in Sofia Coppola.
Actually, hold up, isn’t Shirley Temple still alive?
Marlon Brando never received one. Nor did Stanley Kubrick, John Ford, Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin, Robert Altman, Hal Ashby, and countless others. The idea that they should be passed over because Betty White did well on SNL is a laugh. One of these days, Spike Lee should probably get the award too. He’s black, you know.
In all fairness, Meryl Streep has won seven Golden Globes, four of them in the last decade. She’s not exactly crying out for lifetime achievement honors just yet.
That final comment was partially a joke. I actually do think Spike should/could be honored within the next decade or so. I was just pointing out that women are not the only demographic who may feel slighted. Too bad that cock-eyed Asian from Tremors hasn’t done more movies.
Will, boring and predictable are not the same thing. One does not necessarily follow the other.
I’ll give you the fact that it was predictable though. But such is the nature of these kinds of awards. I, for one, am thankful that it went to someone deserving. That’s really all I personally ask for.
Do you think that there is any chance that anyone other than Scorsese would present though?
“If Guy Lodge really cared about women in the industry he’d change his name. It’s gotta be a pseudonym anyway.”
I’ve always felt my parents picked well with “Guy,” but there are an infinite number of cooler surnames I could choose than “Lodge.”
It’s Robert Guy Lodge, actually, if that makes it any more plausible. ;)
Would you be averse to us calling you Bobby G?
You may call me anything you wish, but there’s no guarantee I’ll respond.
“You may call me anything you wish, but there’s no guarantee I’ll respond.”
And that, in the nutshell, is the difference between you and Kristopher Tapley. Fact.
And Kris, it was a joke. It wasn’t meant to offend.
Betty White got her SAG achievement award last year certainly not for hosting SNL live, but for her 60 years old career that includes two little shows called The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls. BTW I listed 12 more women, who IMHO deserve to be awarded and didn’t say White was the most deserving. Neither did I say that the legendary actor Robert De Niro is an undeserving choice.
Many actors and actresses did some good work in the 1970s and 1980s. But Betty White is only entering the conversation because of her recent resurgence on SNL, some commercials, The Proposal, and the new TV series Hot in Cleveland. My SNL comment was just a quick way of summarizing my point, but I certainly didn’t mean for it to seem like I was dismissing your comments outright or assuming that you were putting Betty White above the other women you listed. I actually do admire White’s longevity and variety, but giving her the award still seems like it would be appeasing critics of the award, rather than honoring one of the most worthy careers. In all honesty, I’m not that crazy about the Globes or the DeMille award, but I’d rather her get it than someone with a bad attitude.
This non-argument is dragging on for too long. There are many women who deserve to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Fact.
Robert De Niro is definitely deserving of the award for decades worth of incredible performances. Fact.
Some people think his receiving the award this year is boring and predictable. Who cares? It’s their opinion, they can think whatever they want.
Bobby G is an amazing nickname for Guy. Fact.
Amen:).
I wasn’t arguing. I have a typing exam this Thursday and this is my only chance to practice.
Robert Lodge is too close to Robert Loggia in my mind. This changes everything.
One of several reasons I don’t go by that name.
How do you feel about RoLo?
Think of it as an L.A. Confidential reference.
