In Contention

Portman and Coppola for Christian Dior

Posted by Guy Lodge · 10:47 am · February 22nd, 2011

As Nina Sayers might observe, “Ooh, look how pink! So preeeeetty.” Minor fluff, but the ad does point out just how well-matched Natalie Portman’s lissome screen presence is to Sofia Coppola’s fey visual sensibility — how has a feature collaboration between the two not happened yet? (If the male decoration looks familiar, by the way, it’s Alden Ehrenreich — the man some excitable critics briefly afflicted with “new Brando” talk after he appeared in Papa Coppola’s “Tetro” two years ago.)

He was also in Somewhere for a second. I actually really liked him in Tetro. I’m hoping to see him pop up again.

Oh Christian Dior, you really didn’t have to pay Coppola for this. It’s pretty much like all the other perfume ads.

Coppola needs to make a film like “Hotel Chevalier” plus “Lost in Translation” in Paris with Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling. This will be PERFECT!!!

Jim, I diagre. As I said over on MCN:

“Sofia is among the very few who actually gets how these things should be done. She gets it better than Buz Luhrmann or Jean Pierre Jeunet. Or Rob Marshall, for that matter.

Extra props for using Ginsbourg for music.”

I liked Ehrenreich in Tetro too. Although he didn’t remind me of Brando, I could agree to a Warren Beatty /Montgomery Clift kind of 1950s beautiful angst.
