Tell us what you thought of ‘Super 8’

Paramount is rolling out J.J. Abrams’s “Super 8” 24 hours ahead of schedule today with an IMAX-heavy release in over 300 theaters. That’s the #Super8Secret, and it reads to me as a desperate, though perhaps smart attempt to get some high-dollar ticket sales in the bank for a low-tracking film in advance of the weekend. Whether some like it or not, I have my own feelings on this one. But so will you. Since it’s making its way to the public today, we might as well jump the gun on this post, too. So cut loose with your thoughts below when you get around to the film this weekend.

Just saw it and I actually liked it quite a bit. I do agree that it loses steam towards the end and those lens flares were REALLY annoying, but the cast won me over and there were some really thrilling moments. People complained about the implausibility of the characters surviving certain scenarios, but I feel like this is a movie where you just accept certain aspects and go along for the ride.

I feel like watching E.T. again to wipe off the bitter taste in my mouth after watching this movie….

I don’t think the movie was unwatchable, but I sure as Hell wouldn’t recommend it to anyone with an evenly remotely well-tuned movie palette. Rudimentary filmmaking from beginning to end. That opening shot of the “XXX days since last accident” sign being changed? Ohmygod, shoot me now with your horribly obvious storytelling.

Now that I’ve written my own opinion, I’m excited to finally read Kris’s write-up. The title “Super H8d It” leads me to believe we’re on similar train of thought.

    Bad J.J. Abrams. Bad.

I thought the opening was a great device to not only setup the story, but immediately impact you emotionally. I would think the “rudimentary” approach would have been to shwo the mother or the accident at first. Maybe even a flashback later on in the film would have been the more obvious approach.

I’m okay with the opening. It’s one of those things that are so simple it seems lazy, but it worked for me.
