Butterflies

Neither here nor there, I guess, but this morning’s random bit of anxiety concerns the forthcoming remake of “Let the Right One In,” Matt Reeves’s “Let Me In.”  These concept posters at /Film got the ole’ stomach churning again this morning.  I’m scared to death of this project, and not in a good way.

I didn’t realize they’d changed the title. Did they think “Let the Right One In” was too many words for mainstream viewers to digest?

    This smells fishy.

So I understand (somehow) remaking it for US audiences that don’t go along too well with subtitles – but how is this to be attractive to the internnational audiences ?

Guy: I heard that the change in the title was because it is a more direct and proper translation in English from the original Swedish title, but since the title was based off of song lyrics, not sure how true that is.

I do like the new title though… and am looking forward to the movie since it is based off of the book and not a just a remake of the movie.

I don’t understand remaking a movie that was pretty much perfect to begin with, foreign or not.

Matt Reeves has said he has nothing but respect for the original, but doesn’t this just guarantee fewer people will see it?

Let me in is the book title in english as well. I don’t see the point of this remake… I think it will be benign but unremarkable. The real crime will be that fewer people will have seen the swedish film.

Dear. Freaking. Lord. I’m scared, too, Kris. Let the Right One In was a masterpiece. Matt Reeves or not, the remake will fuck up every perfect nuance about the original. MAYBE it’ll be good, but I have a bad feeling. Very, very, very, bad, bad, bad, bad.

It isn’t as bizarre as the remake of Death at a Funeral, a two year old movie already in English.

When I first heard this news I was taken aback and quite pissed that Hollywood was doing this to yet ANOTHER successful foreign horror movie. And having Reeves’ as director doesn’t help (I did not like Cloverfield. At. All.).

But I have to entertain the possibility that this MIGHT turn out OK. Remember when people were up in arms that “Infernal Affairs” was being Hollywood-ized? We then got “The Departed,” which was awesome.

Reeves’ being attached makes me very wary, but I’ll hope for the best on this one.

LET ME IN is not the original title of the novel. It’s the American publishers title ONLY for the US book market. The original title in English (and in all other English speaking countries), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is actually more accurate than the Swedish title LÅT DEN RÄTTE KOMMA IN because it’s a quote from the Morrissey song LET THE RIGHT ONE SLIP IN and that song has a line as the title:
    LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
    LET THE OLD DREAMS DIE
The author of the novel, John Ajvide Lindqvist, is a big Morrissey-fan.
This change of the title is so… silly.

Thank you! I was starting to think I’d dreamed the Morrissey reference.

Luckily, you have full control of your bodies and you don’t have to see the remake if it causes you so much anxiety.

Well at least Kodi Smit-McPhee was cast.

Whether I see it or not is beside the point, Chad. It’s the mere existence of the project that gives me indigestion.
