‘Fish Tank’ trailer

It’s been six weeks since I saw (and loved) Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize winner “Fish Tank” at the Edinburgh fest, and the film simply will not leave me alone. Scenes and images from Arnold’s simultaneously exhilarating and devastating portrait of an Essex adolescence keep popping vividly into my head at random intervals — and I’m more and more convinced that young Katie Jarvis has given the single best performance of 2009 to date.

I’m afraid this trailer doesn’t do a great job of selling what distinguishes the film from its kitchen-sink peers: Arnold’s impressionistic use of music and sound, its ambiguous sexual currency, the zest and rhythm of its dialogue. Just take my word for it that this is a very special piece of work. It’s out on 11 September in the UK; Americans must wait indefinitely. (It will, of course, play at Toronto next month.)

Guy, will you be attending the Toronto film Festival? Fish Tank will premiere there and I will definitely be there to see it. I’m glad you enjoyed it at Edinburgh!

John Foote is covering Toronto for us, Simone.

Meanwhile, I’ll be on my way home from Venice ;)

This looks amazing. Young British thesps seem to be the best bets recently.

I hope this is better than both Arnold’s last flick, “Red Road”, which I found a bit uninspired and far less powerful than it should have been, and the godawful “A Way of Life”, which this film looks quite similar to, if only because the lead actresses seem to be striking similar notes.

Was I the only one left confused as to what the film is actually about?

Trailer didn’t do much for me I prefered the clips that poped up when this was a t Cannes. Still the reviews are what made me interested in this to begin with so just hope it comes to the US soon. And slayton I agree I hope it is better the “Red Road” which was fine but not that memerable

The trailer isn’t much (i’m surprised they couldn’t cut a better one around “California Dreaming”) but the film, which I saw yesterday, is a STUNNER! Absolutely brilliant, no doubt. Jarvis is excellent too.

So glad you think so, Glenn.

And yeah, what’s up with not using Womack in the trailer? I kept expecting it to kick in. (Anyway, best use of an individual song in a film for ages, I think.)
