While I felt underwhelmed by the content of the trailer, it’s hard to say something negative about it because it’s not the way the film is meant to be seen. It’s like presenting the Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa without color.

I don’t understand all of the negative comments, I thought the trailer was incredible and the scenery was beautiful and incredibly realistic.

I wasnt blown away like how some people made it seemed and i agree with Soun Designer Dan.But I loved the music and this movie looks beautiful.Thumbs Up

Yay, very nice. Imagery is breathtaking and I’m sure once we see it all together, in context, we will be astounded by the thoroughness and detail of this expansive world.

I’ve had low expectations for Avatar for a while now and this just raised them quite a bit. But my question is that if this film fails will it kill 3D?

I see no reason to sugar coat it. I hated the trailer and everything in it. Fox lost $12 here.

I gave it a thumbs down, but it’s really not clear cut like that.

Loved the teaser. Download the 1080p teaser from apple, pause and browse through the teaser. Once Na’Vi starts showing up, you wud appreciate the perfect rendering of the visual imagery and how real the texture of the skin looks.

Having said that, my expectations of the movie have gone down little bit since the plot feels like a typical sci-fi story and the design of Na’Vi heavily borrows from Final Fantasy, Battlefield Earth etc etc and the very recent Battle for Terra. I do have lots of hope on Cameron’s story telling. This wud be an amazing movie watching experience but I am not expecting THE BEST movie watching experience ever.

32-31 at the moment. Right down the middle.

I thought it was great. It certainly lived up to my expectations, which are pretty high, but I never bought into the whole “mindblowing” FX thing.

I’m pretty much in total agreement with Roshan, the presentation and visual effects are superb, but I’m becoming a little worried about the story being a derivative mish-mash of better films.

I don’t know how anyone can be excited about anything when the entire trailer has one line of dialogue, that being “This is great”. Is it just the images that people are getting so excited about? I guess I am old fashioned.

Well, I would have voted thumb right in the middle, but I really wasn’t that wowed — and I wasn’t hugely stoked for it in the first place — so thumbs down it is.

I was a little underwhelmed, but I gave it thumbs up. I’m sure it will make a greater impact in 3D.

Originally thinking thumbs down but once one or two more viewings, thumbs up. I think the scenery, set designs, and just the world look visually beautiful, rich, and detailed. As for the Avatars, the first few glances I liked, but as it progressed it didn’t come off as realistic as I hoped. Most likely they will be working on the effects 24/7 till the film is released, so hopefully they can improve on little details.

Trailer doesn’t reveal too much plot, but I guess that is why its called a teaser. I think Cameron though has an interesting story(not sold on the love aspect yet), has huge ambitions, and wants to create an epic movie experience and I think by releasing a trailer such as this I have more of an idea what to expect, leaving this film to possibly blow my expectations because they are not ridiculously high.

A better poll would be “What do the creatures most resemble?”

So far we’ve got Delgo variant, Smurf/High Elf hybrid, and Smurf/Velociraptor hybrid.

    (Ahh! The snark is spreading…)

James: Your logic makes no sense. It needed dialogue to make you exicted?

As a teaser, I think it gave away too much too soon (even if there was no dialogue). I would make it only about the first part when the main character becomes the Na’vi.

I like the imagery and the creatures look very sharp. Given the fact that the film has been made for 3D, some of the impact is lost when is watched in a computer.

The movie looks intriguing and I’ll see it when it comes out. But the hype has put “Avatar” on an impossible situation.

  19. James D. Avatar

Kris, what am I supposed to judge it on? Admittedly, I don’t know much about this, but is everyone excited about visuals alone? Where is the story? Who are the characters? What is the conflict that justifies the existence of the film?

How does Air Bending fit into the plot? j/k

Jurassic Park came out in 1993 and Avatar will come out in 2009. I guess I’m now fully convinced that Steven Spielberg just created and filmed real Dinosaurs.

However, I think the 2 Na’vi that are about to embrace in a hug at the end look amazing! They look the most realistic to me. I guess the same goes for the one that’s yelling in a close up.

  21. Jonathan Spuij Avatar

Gave away too much? It’s just a lot of shots from the movie tied together. No dialogue, nothing. I’ll admit the footage is telling but I don’t think we[‘ve barely scratched the surface of the plot here.

It’ll probably be something like this: the guy is an injured fighter (he’s in a wheelchair, right?) and he utilizes the avatar technology / essentially switches bodies a la Captain Ginyu from Dragonball Z / becomes a Na’vi (“This is great”) / gains full mobility again. Then he meets the female Na’Vi–a real one, mind you. Initially, he views the transformation as extravagant, but eventually, he falls in love with the girl Na’Vi. Then tragedy/warfare breaks, where he then has to choose a side. Blah blah, et al.

    Oh… and she’s probably pregnant.

Having seen the Avatar footage at “Avatar Day” I can say with confidence that watching it on a computer monitor does it an incredibly injustice. There are images in there that are truly awe inspiring in the use of colours, effects and composition. The trailer doesn’t do it justice, but it’s still fine. It’s brave and it’s actually a teaser (no dialogue, etc)

  25. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Hey Glenn, post these thoughts in the new thread if you don’t mind. I’d like to get everyone’s reaction to the theatrical stuff in one place, see if minds change, etc.

The trailer shows what it is. An animated film that sounded like Pocahontas in space.

    Nothing else.

Sounds like a failure from what they were trying to do, which is to make it pass as a non-animated movie and to “blow people away” with visual technology.

    Not happening.
