‘Inception’ trailer

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:46 am · August 24th, 2009

Leonardo DiCaprio in InceptionI steered clear of all bootlegs of this throughout the weekend and I really didn’t want to go see “Inglourious Basterds” again, so this morning I got my first peek at the “Inception” teaser trailer.  I like.

In fact, it reminds me of a time when trailers did what they were originally supposed to do: pique a viewer’s interest without giving away the plot.  And that’s what this discombobulated series of images and sounds does.  In fact, I almost wish I didn’t know as much about the plot as I do, because the disorienting action sequence at the tail end of the trailer makes a certain kind of sense that it wouldn’t make if I knew nothing, making the “WTF” moment that much more resonant.

I’m also happy there is excitement around trailer debuts again.  It’s a real art form, I feel.  And it’s come to a point of numbing the populace with the standard paint by numbers, three acts in two minutes structure.  Whatever you had to say of the look of “Avatar” in the recently released trailer, you can’t say it spoils the story.  And that’s certainly true of “Inception.”

Check out the trailer, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies after the jump.

    God bless Chris Nolan.

And is that Cillian Murphy being dragged away from a helicopter?

Sam Worthington and DiCaprio have the best agents in the world. Might they have the same one?

    Pretty cool.

And is it just me, or does Leonardo DiCaprio look a bit like Christopher Nolan himself in that photo?

I’m ridiculously excited for this movie. And that was a brilliant teaser. Nolan and his marketing team are incredible.

Wow, look how far we’ve come. Now they’ve got trailers FOR trailers and bootlegs of trailers.

I just wish this would be the only trailer for Inception. But you know, that’s just impossible.

I’m sensing a trend here (and I’m certain Nolan won’t admit it) but I have a feeling that deep down inside, the guy’s wandering through Gotham in order to finance the projects he truly believes. (”The Prestige”, “Inception”).

Plus, it’s rare and refreshing to see a big-budget studio director who writes his own (original) screenplays.

I don’t want to piss on the parade here, but…it didn’t do too much for me. Maybe my expectations were too high. Anyhow, it doesn’t seem as unique as I was hoping it would. and since it’s so ambitious, I’ll just pray we don’t have a “Medellin” on our hands.

And yes, Leo does look a lot like Chris Nolan in these pictures and clips. By the way, is it just me, or did they shoot this thing in about a week? I remember just hearing it announced…

    bill, they’re still filming.

chase, i’m sure he’s using at least some of his batman paycheck to finance his “smaller” movies, but i definitely think he’s a batman fan. i’ve been a lifelong batman fan and nolan and his brother “get” the mythos. they put in so many nods and allusions to various batman comics in both begins and tdk–they absolutely get this character and the world he inhabits. contrast that w/ tim burton and schumacher who didn’t get anything about batman and didn’t seem to care that much, either.

Good trailer, except for the stupid “Your mind is the scene of the crime” tagline.

Chase: Very FFC of him. I hope that Nolan doesn’t go down the same path.

Although between The Prestige and Memento, he may already be more successful than FFC was on his pet projects.

Regarding using Batman to finance pet projects… So far I don’t think it’s worked out that way at all. The Prestige was greenlit BEFORE Nolan started on Batman Begins, and he got the project on the back of Following (rather than Memento). He could have made The Prestige before Batman but didn’t want to have to rush through it. And The Prestige (the book) was brought to him by some producer or another (not his wife, I don’t think), so it wasn’t like some indie passion project he’d been trying on his own to get off the ground. It was all set up prior to his involvement with the Batman franchise.

I’ll admit it–when I was at work and read what Kris posted about the trailer, I just assumed his Chris Nolan fanboy was showing. But now that I’ve had a chance to see it, the trailer really does make me want to see the movie.

Chad, I would disagree with you about the stupid tagline. Maybe it seems that way because we know nothing of the plot, but I am curious to see how Nolan delves into the human mind.

For me, Christopher Nolan is the greatest director of this decade. I just love every one of his films. Some more than others of score, but Memento, TDK and The Prestige are deeply with me in my movies likes.

The movie might be good and the tagline might well be applicable, but that doesn’t make it sound any less trite.

I’m just never going to try to “understand” Nolan’s appeal anymore. It’s a one trick pony that keeps circling around to massive cinematic fanboy ogling.
