The man has certainly proved he can play a villain well.

He’ll certainly elevate the film but lets face it Seth Rogen is still the Green Hornet. Can someone please explain why?

Good for him, nice move to move while hot. Also, I’m guessing there will be more of an opportunity here for him to display his comedic timing–his smoking pipe and “bingo” moments in IB were great.

Hollywood strikes again. Another good actor is the casualty.

I agree with red_wine for the most part. Sure, Waltz has the chops to play in a big budget hollywood film, but he can do much better things. But then again, he seems to have pulled a Gene Hackman; opting for ‘good’ movies that pay a crap load of money because the movies that have personal meaning/intelligenace don’t, or rarely do.
It will still be interesting to see what he can do with the role. All in all, I think it’s a good move on his part. A nice pay at the end of the day, I’m sure.

Don’t most actors want to work with Michel Gondry? And don’t most actors want to be remembered for more than one performance?
I dig it. A lot.

Michel Gondry’s a great director, so no, I don’t think Waltz is selling out in the slightest.

Ibid evan. Let’s try to refrain from criticizing Waltz — and slamming “The Green Hornet” — until we actually, you know, see the movie.

I think it’s a great move. He’s 52, for crying out loud, it’s not everyone who manages to shine on the spotlight at that age. He has to make the most of it. And to accept a role (alledgedly) for money on a Michel Gondry film isn’t too shabby. Even if some of his movies are flawed (“Be Kind, Rewind”), he always brings something interesting to the screen.

I think it was pretty inevitable that Waltz would sign up for a big Hollywood villian role, but we should be greatful that it’s with a director with visual panache like Gondry.
Let’s face it – Christoph could have gone for much worse…
Transformers 3
X-Men Origins: Magneto
All horrible horible thoughts

Let’s not pretend he’s signing to play a cuddly Disney character directed by Shawn Levy.
Gondry directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind guys, give him some credit.

Hmm…Jennifer Connelly in Hulk, Halle Berry in Catwoman, Thomas Haden Churh in Spider-Man 3, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen, Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2…and now the inevitable Oscar nominee/winner Christoph Waltz and Green Hornet.
Seems like a role in a big superhero movie is the reward many actors get for recieving an Oscar or nomination. Any thoughts on this?

Good for him, he’s waited a long time for his break, why not make some money while he has the opportunity. He’s not a young guy with a long career ahead of him still. If he’s really lucky he will have the chance to make commercial and critically acclaimed movies.

When Michel Gondry is the director I don’t think it can quite be considered taking the money and running. I’m excited for this project. It might not turn out great but it’ll definitely be interesting on some level.

I could not be more excited. It’s already been pointed out that Gondry deserves respect, and I admit, I like Seth Rogen.

No way is Waltz selling out. Good move. it just helps get more name recognition for future roles. Who says the Green Hornet is gonna suck with Gondry at the helm?
