PGA goes to 10

Written by

In a move entirely expected, the Producers Guild has expanded its tally of nominated films to 10, just like AMPAS.  Key quote from the release:

“The PGA board approved the expansion of our Best Produced Picture category nominations to support our colleagues at the Academy, but also because we feel it better represents the unprecedented diversity of films being produced today,” said PGA President Marshall Herskovitz in a statement.

Sure.

The PGA nominees will be announced January 5, four weeks before the Oscar announcement. The awards ceremony will take place January 24.

does this mean that animated films and documentaries can be nominated too? if not then the move is pointless

I’m kinda okay with this… I just hope that the Golden Globes don’t do the same thing and expand both of their Motion Picture categories to ten nominees…

    Unprecedented diversity?

    Am I missing something?

I know the awards season typically begins in the Fall but did we we not just experience a summer slate of films that seemed rather homogenous in their ability to make your head explode? Is that unprecedented diversity?

It drives home the fact that how absolutely handicapped, dependent upon the oscars like crutches these awards are, begging for even an iota of relevance. Their glory solely stems from the fact that they have some overlapping members with the academy and are swept up in the pre-oscars season. This was bound to happen. The Baftas have maintained some slight autonomy(read bias towards British cinema) but are increasingly only good as Oscar predictors and I won’t be surprised to see them make a move too.

While I think the oscar move to 10 nominees may payoff, I wish this didn’t happen even if it was fully expected. I’ve been hoping that the 10 nominees could open things up to surprises (even with the NBR and AFI top ten lists) but if more and more precursors go to ten, we might have a fairly clear idea of the nominees beforehand.

I agree w/ Ben M — I want some surprises and if the “precursors” all go to 10 – then, well…hun…not sure what I think of that, there are already far too many award bodies which are relatively generic in nature.

Not unexpected, and would prevent the possibility of plausible contenders for Best Picture being formally codified.
