Animated slate still in limbo

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 2:34 pm · October 15th, 2009

The Missing LynxEarlier today Tom O’Neil reported that “Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone” will not qualify for the animated feature Oscar race because it was released in Japan in 2007.  That would bring the number of qualifying titles from 16 down to 15.

However, there seem to be films in play that we hadn’t previously considered.  According to a commenter at the website Cartoon Brew, an Antonio Banderas-produced film called “The Missing Lynx: Paws on the Run” will receive a qualifying run on November 13.  I haven’t verified that info yet but it’s something to keep an eye on.  Here’s a quick profile of the project.  There is also the outside chance of “The Secret of Kells” making it’s way at the last minute.

Nevertheless, for the moment, without “Evangelion,” we’re looking at a three-nominee race once again, unless something comes along to save the day.  Does Disney have anything else it would like to randomly shuffle from home video to theatrical run?

More coverage of the category here, here and here.

It’s not a non-issue given how competitive the category is this year. And even besides, they aren’t my arbitrary rules. Whether the category gets three or five nominees is indeed news (at least when all is settled it is).

Yes. The Missing Lynx is on the run for Academy consideration.
The film won the Goya award from the Spanish Academy of Motion picture Arts to the best animated feature film in 2008. It was awarded the best animated feature film award in Animadrid 2008 , best animated feature at the San Diego Latino film festival, and Jury award at the Giffonni children film festival in Italy ans Animacor 2008.

Also, are we sure Mary & Max is going to be eligible since I saw it listed on my cable’s on demand service which I know has disqualified movies before that were put there before or at the start of the theatrical release, and as far as I know M&M has yet to get a US theatrical release (at least here in NYC, maybe it got a quick one in LA).

I really hope it turns out to be 5 contenders. Given all the talk about percentage success in case of 5 nominees, no body can deny that this year has thrown up a rich slate of animated movies. The 10 best picture slots might have 1 or 2 fillers and less-than-respectable movies but the same cannot be said about the animated category this year even if there are 5 slots.
