One of the big hits at this year’s Toronto Film Festival was Rodrigo Garcia’s “Mother and Child.” Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson each began to stir the awards buzz pot, but a distributor wasn’t stepping forward (as has been increasingly the case lately).
Well, the always game Sony Pictures Classics seems to have manned up and taken on the production. While no release date was indicated on the press release, I imagine the film will be held for next year’s stable (which already includes Aaron Schneider’s “Get Low”).
The press release, in part:
Sony Pictures Classics announces its acquisition of United States’ rights to Rodrigo García’s MOTHER AND CHILD from WME Global. The film debuted at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a Gala Presentation, where it was actively pursued by several US distributors.
MOTHER AND CHILD is the moving tale about the choices we make, the chances we miss, the opportunities we seize and the power of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child…
“We have known Rodrigo García for a long time, first as the cinematographer of MI VIDA LOCA in the early ‘90s, then as a writer and director, and have always been impressed with his incredible skill at creating roles for actors, especially for women. With MOTHER AND CHILD Rodrigo has managed to define characters which allow for career best performances for all of the actors he has cast in a film that we feel will connect with people all over the U.S. We are excited to be working with him, his remarkable cast and his producers Julie Lynn and Lisa Maria Falcone,” said Sony Pictures Classics.

This is great news. Annette Bening (one of the best actresses ever) will win the Oscar for Best Actress. Take my word!

I can’t wait to see this movie. I had really hoped they would release it this year, but they probably will save it for next year. sigh.

Is Annette Bening the early favourite to win best actress in 2010? I think so…

If they decide to release it this year, then it is Bening’s to lose

Man, Sony Classic seems to be cleaning up as of late, even more that normal seems to be on their plate for 2009 and even 2010 already (especially considering the push, even if minor, for Rockwell in Moon).

At least we know one thing now: Hilary Swank will be nominated for something in 2010.

I prefer to think of Swank as the Luise Rainer of the 21st century.

She’s more like Sally Field, actually, except with less prominence and respect. Like Goddess Sally, Skank won a very deserving Oscar in a 19_9 year. Then, 5 years later, each win a second Oscar, arguably unworthy for each. (I haven’t seen “Places in the Heart”, but I wish Judy Davis had won instead. There’s no doubt each of the other 4 contenders were more worthy than Hilary though.) And then, Field was never nominated again and returned to TV to clean-up Emmys.
I’m not sure Seabiscuint will be quite so fortunate though.

Since the cast list published at the Toronto & San Sebastian Film Festivals, and other public Screening has clearly marked Naomi Watts as 1st Lead and Annette Bening as 2nd co-lead, perhaps Bening’s chance would better be in the supporting category. Watts, on her own merits and with another great performance recognized by equally positive reviews, she would for sure be on the ride to a nomination for Best Actress when the film is officially released to the public next year.
