‘Crazy Heart’ gets a release date

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:22 pm · November 5th, 2009

Jeff Bridges in Crazy HeartFox Searchlight Pictures has settled on a December 16, 2009 release date for Scott Cooper’s “Crazy Heart,” which I wrote up yesterday.  Here’s the synopsis from the studio.  Nothing you don’t know, but at least it’s “official” verbiage:

Four-time Academy Award® nominee JEFF BRIDGES stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film CRAZY HEART from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart.

Awesome. With such a thin Best Actor race, I just knew Searchlight would come to their senses eventually.

My predictions are adjusted accordingly. (Side note: Who knew the Best Song category would be so stacked this year?)

exciting last minute shake up, i have a hard time believing the movie around the performance will merit something along the lines of the wrestler but i sure hope it does

    Two seven-people races now?

Streep Mulligan Sidibe…Cornish Cotillard Ronan Mirren
Firth Bridges Clooney…Freeman Day-Lewis Mortensen Renner

Kris, how do you feel about Crazy’s BP chances? Apparently the writer-director is debuting, which I think helps to cut down significantly directing lauds’ chances.

BTW, am I the only one getting a sort of “Electric Horseman” vibe out of this? Without the stolen horse and chase scenes, of course.

This is very good news indeed. I know I won’t be able to see it in Dec if it’s only LA and NY but I’m hoping it’ll do well enough to be brought to my area after the first of the year. This is definitely one of my most anticipated movies now.

Speaking of actors nominations, I am also hoping Jeremy Renner gets a nomination. However, no one seems to mention Anthony Mackie and I think he was also terrific in The Hurt Locker. I hear no buzz but I’d have no problems with him getting a Supporting Actor nom.

I won’t be sad to see Matt Damon replaced personally (especially if he gets nominated for supporing in Invictus – if the part pans out to be worthy.) I didn’t really think his role in The Informant! was all that special (it was good just not great imho) but I am excited to hear that this late in the game some other (really good) names are beginning to show up.
