Making the werewolves of ‘New Moon’

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:53 am · November 21st, 2009

I’m only posting this because it cracks me up how, I don’t know, disinterested Chris Weitz appears at the beginning of this clip (courtesy of MakingOf).  “One more big pay day before hanging it up.  Just get through it.  Go through the motions.”  Probably the wrong read, but anyway:

And this thing bitch-slapped “The Dark Knight”’s opening day record with something like $70 million. Sadness…

AAAH!!!! FUCK OFF TWILIGHT!!! I’m seriously getting SICK AND TIRED of all the posters in the streets and all the girls who just like it because of their female hormones and NOT because it’s actually a decent film at least. UGH.

I haven’t been to NM yet, but I will. Twilight was hardly great cinema, but it was fun enough for what it was. And I can’t help but be a little happy that this might force Hollywood to realize that female tentpole movies can exist and that we can be geeks too, thankyouverymuch.

I can tell I’m starting to become an old coot because the whole Twilight thing is something I don’t get. I’d barely even heard of it when the first film came out, and when my curiousity to see what the fuss was all about just recently, I couldn’t believe how awful it was, and my expectations were extremely low to begin with. Not awful in a “I don’t get it because I’m not a teen girl” kind of way either, it was just a really poorly acted, oddly put-together movie.

Now that New Moon manages to be an enormous hit in light of how bad it’s predecessor is.. well, I feel bad for teenage girls who apparently thinks this qualifies as something good and worth watching. Their poor, uncontrollable teenage hearts deserve to be fed something better than this.

The series is horribly written and disgusts me as a feminist, writer and budding filmmaker. But I do understand what Hero is saying.
The problem with this is Hollywood may think the only way to pander to women and make money is through ‘romantic’ crap like this. As a woman into comics, science fiction, fantasy and horror I want to see women and minorities involved in front of and behind the camera in work that doesn’t insult my intelligence or involve heavy handed stereotypes.
But the Twilight series is not it.

    PerishTheSun,
And I see where you’re coming from. Trust me, I sincerely hope that if Hollywood does decide to try out more female centered blockbusters, they will be from better source material and be better executed.

i hope it beats Dark Night, that movie wasnt what it was all cracked up 2 be, although Twilight is definitely worse. saw the 1st one 4 the 1st time recently, wow, noting happens in that move at all, just like a Nirvana record withough the music, all teen angst and what have u, still, at least there is a female in the movie and its doing big numbers cause chicks dont really get 2 be stars anymore.

@PerishThe sun, why are women always the first to attack other females success? its like u girls make a big deal about sexism, along come a chick flick that as Kris says, bitchslapped ol bathead into the dustbin, and u already mad again.

i aint no feminist but i am very proud of this films success nd will probably look at it and yep, those vampires on Conan were hillarious.

Today is a sad day indeed for movies indeed. I might have to wear black when I head to the theater today and pop in “The Dark Knight” tonight.

@mike Just because I am a woman doesn’t mean I should blindly support the work other woman create, successful or not. I am not supporting Twilight because it is horribly written/acted etc and IMO the series has some very sexist/horrid/anti-feminist tropes. I’m really getting annoyed with comments like this that tell me as a black latina I have to support anything and everything a black person, latino or woman create because we share the same minority status. I want women and minorities to succeed while NOT reinforcing harmful ideas and stereotypes in crappy movies.

@Marshall ha! I’m going to watch TDK, too. The fact that New Moon is outselling it doesn’t make me sad for everyone involved in TDK it just makes me sad for the likes of teenage girls who deserve better entertainment.

Dark Knight fans (and movielovers in general) need not worry though, it won’t be able to touch the opening weekend record, New Moon is incredibly frontloaded (even by frontloaded standards), most are predicting it’ll “only” get about $130m for the weekend.

I can’t stand Taylor Lautner. I think his acting ability peaked when he played Shark boy in Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

No way New Moon beats TDK, because only one gender and even one age group will see New Moon whereas TDK had broad appeal.

And even if it did (though it won’t)? I think it’s pathetic to worry that something like that. These people should get a life.

No that I have a problem with girls getting their kicks out of a guy flick. As a guy I think it’s a great and fair thing. I just wish it was a different movie.

Still, $72 million opening day. In the words of the King in the “Two Towers”: “How did it come to this?”.

Only two more of these movies to go. That’s two too many, but at least this isn’t a series of Wheel of Time proportions.

At the very least, we should be thankful this series isn’t being stretched out over the decade. Four movies in three, three and a half years. Think of it like a terribly painful needle prick.

This movie was TERRIBLE. Felt like it was 4 hours long and the 2.5 hour running was WAY TOO LONG. CG was crap, writing was crap, over all I also think this whole series gives a bad ideas or message to teenage girls.

All the self-destructing Bella does when Edward leaves and he like cant like without him and has night terrors, and would rather die than be alone from him, not very good messages.
