Reel Geezers on ‘Precious’

Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:35 am · November 27th, 2009

I’m featuring this review for one reason: if anybody had concerns that the older white majority of the Academy would be resistant to “Precious” … well, worry no more. (The Geezers are on indieWIRE these days, by the way.)

I didnt know people felt that way. If anything, Precious is the anti-Do The Right Thing or Boyz n the Hood. It has absolutely nothing to say about the black experience and instead plays heavily on white guilt.

It’s the safest whitest movie possibly made, featuring black people, created by black filmmakers. Once they attached Oprah to it, getting old white people on board became a no-brainer.

    Loyal,

Precious isn’t a film about the so called “black experience,” it’s a film about characters who happen to be black.

    lol “the black experience”.

How come it mostly seems to be privileged white people who whine the loudest about films like Precious and Slumdog Millionaire being “racist” and “patronising”?

I’m fucking sick of the white guilt accusation. If you want white guilt, watch “Jackie Brown”.

“Precious” was intended for black audiences. I don’t see it as art-house, or commercial.
The fact that it made a breakthrough at Sundance means the indie crowd is tried of the same white bread, weirdo, pretentious, bullshit – which makes the best of list for the online set.

That’s funny. Almost as funny as movies by and featuring Tyler Perry and the Wayans Bros., speaking of safe.
