I thought Sherlock Holmes looked interesting until I just found out that Guy Ritchie was the director. No thanks.
Dead actor + Holocaust = Iron Cross could see some attention.

Those D-Box seat-tickets cost like $25 orso.

Does ‘Inglourious’ really have as much of a chance as this article suggests? I realize the Weinsteins have some sort of bizarre powers of mind control over Academy voters, but I still have trouble envisioning it…

Inglorious Basterds was very well received critically. Kris didn’t like it, but many, MANY other reviewers did.

Yeah, Ebert and many others loved it. Plus, it is rated much more highly on Metacritic than The Reader.

Do I think Inglourious Basterds could get in for a year with five nominees? Not bloody likely. With ten? I’m predicting it.
Then again, my gut predix before the precursors get into full swing also includes a Best Picture nomination for The Messenger, but I’m just weird like that.

Which reminds me, Kris–I think that (500) Days of Summer is gonna miss Best Original Screenplay in favor of The Messenger. At this point, I’m thinking:
Best bets:
Best Supporting Actor – Woody Harrelson
Best Original Screenplay
Watch out for:
Best Picture
Best Supporting Actress – Samantha Morton
Just my gut talking, and after my gut pointed at a Best Picture nomination for The Reader and about a 70% drop for New Moon, I’ve begun trusting it more and more often.

NOTE: I have not seen The Messenger, so I’m not endorsing it, per se. Just offering my predix.

I mean, it’s a bit cutesy and on-the-nose with some of it, but I admire its willingness to play around with structure and cinematic techniques. Granted, Webb’s execution of these things (the “Expectations/Reality” segment, the documentary testimonials, and the French film bits, for example) occasionally feel like they would be better left to the music video genre that bred him. Then again, I could make a similar argument about the overall cinematic feel of Precious. Both films have characters and an audience that recognize and respond to that visual language. However, while (500) Days is the music video movie that thinks MTV is lame, Precious uses the visual language of the medium to convey the character’s worldview. That and Precious is grounded by something that isn’t whiny, middle-class angst.
Tom Hansen: “Man, I really wish I was an architect instead of a stupid greeting card writer. Aw, rats.”
Claireece “Precious” Jones: “Man, I really wish MY FATHER DIDN’T RAPE ME AND GIVE ME AIDS!”
Also, I find it hard to believe in the existence of any karaoke bar that doesn’t have one of Springsteen’s most famous, but has the Pixies. In other words, “Look at this fucking hipster.”

Inglourious Basetrds is the dark horse you all look for every year, well there it is.
Avatar is the blue horse, if its good watch it.

The Messenger is building buzz. Supporting Actor is open enough for Harrelson to make it in, and Morton could find herself in the mix, too.
