Hardly something to stop the presses for, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has revealed the 15 eligible titles vying for a Best Animated Feature nod at the Golden Globes.
It’s the same as the 20-title longlist from which the Academy will pick its nominees, minus the following five films: “Astro Boy,” “The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer,” “Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure,” “A Town Called Panic” and “The Secret of Kells.” A pity in the latter two cases. (Irish festival hit “Kells” surprised many with a Best Feature nod at the Annie Awards earlier this week.)
In case you forgot, the Globes have expanded the category to include five nominees this year. Nominations are announced December 15. As you were.

I understand “Tinkerbell”, as that was originally intended for direct-to-video release. Pity for “Kells” and “Panic” though, I agree…not like they’d have a chance at the Globes, however.
Golden Globe nominations are announced next Thursday, correct?

but is Ponyo there too in this case? it shouldn’t be, since it’s in a foreign language…

Ali E., Ponyo was released dubbed in the States, so I don’t think it’s a problem, but it’s possible that the foreign language issue is why A Town Called Panic is omitted… it’s French.

What’s most confusing is why Astro Boy was omitted. It may have bombed, but it got a nation-wide North American release (I even saw it on opening day). So, it should be on their list of contenders. I wouldn’t nominate it, especially in such a strong year for animation, but it still deserves consideration.

Did neither the AMPAS or the Globes voters get to see Mary and Max? Or was it not qualified or something? It’s the best animated movie I saw all year (coming from a hardcore Pixar fan) and it’s total absence from the race makes me angry.
