‘Up in the Air’ leads with six Golden Globe nominations

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:02 am · December 15th, 2009

Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock HolmesApologies for the lateness getting these up.  I decided to sleep in and I’m sure Guy had better things to do.  These, as ever, are schmoozed and bought and paid for, as usual.  You don’t need to look much further than Clint Eastwood’s nomination (when his film couldn’t get into the Best Picture line-up) for evidence of that.  So getting up at 5:00 in the morning just wasn’t on my list of priorities.

I am, however, happy to see “District 9” get another screenplay nomination, which keeps hope alive.  And though expected (for reasons of both quality and celebrity), my favorite nomination is Robert Downey Jr.’s for “Sherlock Holmes.” I think it’s actually a masterful performance that deserves serious awards talk.  But these are all critics citations in a bubble until we hear what the industry itself thinks via guild nominations, so it’s going to be varying degrees of the same old thing for a while.

In any case, here are the nominees are:

Best Picture (Drama)
“Avatar”
“The Hurt Locker”
“Inglourious Basterds”
“Precious”

Sandra Bullock, “The Blind Side”
Helen Mirren, “The Last Station”
Carey Mulligan, “An Education”

Best Actor (Comedy or Musical)
Matt Damon, “The Informant!”
Daniel Day Lewis, “Nine”
Robert Downey Jr., “Sherlock Holmes”
Joseph Gordon Levitt, “(500) Days of Summer”
Michael Stuhlbarg, “A Serious Man”

Best Actress (Comedy or Musical)
Sandra Bullock, “The Proposal”
Marion Cotillard, “Nine”
Julia Roberts, “Duplicity”
Meryl Streep, “Julie & Julia”
Meryl Streep, “It’s Complicated”

Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow, “The Hurt Locker”

Oh, but I’m pleasantly surprised that Bullock got TWO noms! She really did have an outstanding year (as long as you forget that Steve movie…)

And I have to say the best category in terms of overall quality, with the exception of Best Drama is… Best Animated Film! What a killer year for animated films!

there are some satisfying nominations along with some frustrating nominations – as per usual with hfpa – but overall I am pretty pleased with most of the categories. Best Original song is whack, as is all the comedy categories, but it’s just the Golden Globes!

Unrelated – The TV nominees were spot on imho.

Some people have been locked for months and this proves it.

Bullock is SO looking for to get nominated in january. And i must say she may be on to something. Is not like she will win but the nomination is very likely.

Blunt has done well but she will be forgotten by Oscar time, or ignored.

District 9 for screeplay YAY !!!

No 500 days of summer but its complicated got the screenplay nod… what the GG’s do.

As usual they “invited” some of their favourite stars to fill the room with… popularity?

    Julia Roberts?!?! COME. ON.

Shut outs in Picture for Up, An Education, Invictus and The Lovely Bones.

Up In The Air, Avatar, Nine, and The Hurt Locker do well, although the latter really could have done with a nomination for Jeremy Renner in actor.

There will be outrage over the nods for Maguire, Blunt, Meyers, Bullock, Roberts and “Cinema Italiano,” but there’s really nothing shocking about them.

I miss seeing Viggo’s name on the list.

    Will you look at that…

How often have they had this many double nominees in one year?

    Sandra Bullock
    Matt Damon
    Meryl Streep

Just because I like the actors, I’m glad to see these guys somewhere this year:

    Emily Blunt
    Tobey Maguire
    Robert Downey Jr.
    Joseph Gordon Levitt

But big BOOO for Blunt over Abbie Cornish! BOOOOOO!

    Special YAY for:

Michael Stuhlbarg (I hope he wins here!)
    Meryl Streep getting two!
    Julianne Moore
    Woody Harrelson

    WHERE IS BEN FOSTER!!!

Clint Eastwood in with those other directors just doesn’t make sense to me. Feels like a eastwoodie!

That screenplay list is wild: District 9, It’s Complicated – really?

Has anyone else mentioned WINTER for Best Song and I’ve just missed it?

I wonder how likely it is that the Golden Globes will give Best Actress Drama to Bullock instead of Mulligan?

The worst: Julia Roberts getting in for Duplicity [or anything]. And no Serious Man in Best Musical or Comedy, Screenplay or Director. Shocking!

Overall, I like most of the noms. Pity Deschanel didn’t get in for 500 days of Summer. Glad Streep got two and that Emily Blunt was recognised as well.

Great nods overall. My major gripe is Alexandre Desplat missing out for Fantastic Mr Fox in score; and Christian McKay for Orson Welles. We knew those six men would be the ones in play for supporting actor and someone has to be left out.

@Patrick: Up isn’t allowed to be nominated for Picture, to my knowledge, after they introduced the animated category in 2005.

Tobey Maguire and Julia Roberts are the two stupidest nominations. I figured a Razzie nom was more likely for him.

@Michael: Are you for real? The TV noms were awful. Californication is an awful show nowadays (always was lame, but now it’s just grotesquely bad). Damages is worthless, and Rose Byrne is wasting space that Jennifer Carpenter deserved this season. Matthew Morrison is overdramatic, and Joel McHale should have his spot. And don’t even try to defend Entourage, which should be cancelled by now.

Gosh Patrick – you’re right. No INVICTUS for best drama – makes the Eastwood nomination all the more lame.

On the TV side, if the ridiculous season two of True Blood had been appropriately nominated as a comedy series (instead of, say, Entourage), I could probably get behind that…and then Sons of Anarchy or Breaking Bad could have taken that fifth drama slot. But who am I kidding?

Alfred Molina’s snub doesn’t surprise me. I actually think he might miss at the Oscars. Having seen the film, he’s good, but easily outshone. I can see McKay or *gag* Damon snagging his spot.

Maya Rudolph should have had Roberts’s spot. She was excellent in Away We Go.

    Loving the Ponyo snub =).

I disagree with you about Matthew Morrison (I am a Glee fan all the way through) and I think besides the minor gripes that you have mentioned (especially no Jennifer Carpenter!) – overall I was happy to see most of my favorite shows get representation so I feel like the TV nominations turned out really great. But that is just a difference in opinion I guess.

    Happy Bits:
    - Inglourious Basterds! It’s certainly looking a lot like Tarantino will be nominated for Best Director now with a BFCA and Globe nom in tow.
    - (500) Days of Summer and The Informant getting two deserving nominations each.
    - District 9’s surprise nom for screenplay!
    - Michael Stuhlbarg nominated against all odds as the film is snubbed elsewhere. For the star-fucking Golden Globes THAT is saying something.
    - More (surprising) love for the music in Where the Wild Things Are (Very curious to hear the music for A Single Man too, that came out of seemingly nowhere, it’s not available yet on iTunes though, damn!).
    - Up in the Air leading the pack.

    Crappy Bits:
    - Jeremy Renner missing out for Best Actor (I’m certain the Academy’s five will include him though, he’ll get in with SAG).
    - Clint Eastwood for Best Director, for a film that wasn’t nominated for Best Picture?! Yes, you love the guy but come on, that doesn’t even make sense! At least the other four nominees are VERY solid, very worthy.
    - It’s Complicated over Julie & Julia for screenplay.
    - No songs nominated for The Princess and the Frog.
    - A Serious Man snubbed for Best Comedy.
    - Major OUCH for An Education.

On the whole, pretty solid nominees, and I’m glad it wasn’t all completely predictable.

@Michael: Well, you’re awesome in my book for being equally disappointed with no Jennifer Carpenter =). Wasn’t she incredible this season?? The first three, Debra was definitely kind of whiny. But I felt that she matured a great deal, and Carpenter’s emotional breakdown scenes post-gunshot/Lundy and in the finale (among the rest of eps.) were incredibly well-acted.

Perhaps there’s still an opportunity for the Emmys to take notice though.

As for Glee, I really like it, but it has problems. The Emmys won’t be so loving. I wish Jayma Mays would get more love–she’s fantastic, and my fave on the show (well, aside from Puck + Quinn).

Community is the best new series though. Hilarious–it deserves more love.

    Meryl’s Choice:

    a) Offend the makers of It’s Complicated (“in theaters now”) by campaigning for Julie & Julia (her better shot at the award);

    b) Campaign for neither/both, split the vote and lose to, um, Julia Roberts–wreaking havoc with your Oscar chances…

An Education feels very much like this year’s Milk, in the sense that only its lead performance got Globe love. If Molina misses with SAG though, I do think he’s out. Screenplay/Picture should still be a go. I’m hoping Scherfig is still a contender, but either her or Daniels are looking likely to be replaced by Tarantino.

@Lance: I kinda understand about Kendrick. She was really good and all, but I was way more impressed with Farmiga. At least they’re both getting love for now.

Also, we must talk about Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria. She was all but ruled out as a serious contender for a nomination, but now she has both a Golden Globe and BFCA nomination, which is more than Ronan and Mirren with one each, and she has managed it without any support for the film otherwise which is a show of strength.

Is she our fifth nominee? It certainly looks like she and Mirren will be fighting it out over the last spot, with Ronan as a dark horse.

James, I totally agree with you about Californication and Damages…. cable shows coasting on the fact that they are cable shows – with crappy seasons. Network TV had a breakout year, in my opinion… but with not a lot of noms to show for it. It was nice to see a nod for Modern Family, but the shut-out for its talented ensemble is unforgivable. Lost should have been recognized for its mind-blowing season, too.

Michael – I, too, love Glee – but not because of Matthew Morrison (who’s fine… but not award-nomination worthy – Ed O’Neill or Ty Burrell should have taken that spot). I am thrilled for Lea Michelle and Jane Lynch, however.

As a Serious Man lover, I don’t worry about the non-nom in screenplay, because I have complete faith the WGA will see the brilliance there. And without looking, I’d be willing to bet the guild has a better historic correlation with the Academy than the HFPA.

@a-mad: Yessss, Ty Burrell was robbed as well. He’s my favorite of the ensemble–so hilarious. (Even if all of his characters seem like closetcases. Hot.) I think the Emmys will bring justice for this show, and possibly for Community as well.

Thankfully, Emmys HATE Californication. Unfortunately, they love Damages. I don’t get how most critics can loathe that show, and yet it still scores thankless nods/wins.

House–wore out its welcome for noms. Sons of Anarchy deserves its spot. And Katey Sagal needs to get her own accolades ASAP.

Morgan – I’ve thought about that too, especially with Mike Leigh scripts where the actors improvise to create the script. Sometimes, it’s really impossible to fairly judge the screenplay category. Probably all movies include some improvised lines that make the movie so much better. Also, the director can make cuts that dramatically alter how the screenplay is looked at.

    “Bought and paid for”.
That truly sums it up. These just feel so random and all over the place. More like a guest list of people invited than a role-call of merit. I honestly wonder if the artists themselves truly feel happy to be nominated here.

This and the BFCA almost seem petty, and inane. And the Oscars manage to have some dignity inspite of themselves.
End of rant. I should probably get back to preparing for my exams.

Does anyone think that Nine might be on shaky ground in the Best Picture category? It’s been getting a critical DRUBBING so far.

Nine is such a pretentious film. It’s only getting nominated because it’s a big production -this year’s Benjamin Button-.

Nine is the big productin that always gets nominated. Be it 5 or 10 nominees.

It great to see Inglorious Basterds getting some love. It’s finally gotten to the point where even Kris Tapley has to recognize it as one of the top ten potential noms. When I saw it back in august, it was the best film and it still hold the top spot in my book. I have yet to see a film that come close to as good this year. I’m crossing my fingers on Avatar.

You’re right, my bad. Nevertheless, Bolt was his no. 2 choice which just as well proves my point that Kris is hardly someone who has anything against animation!

I think the reason why Jennifer Carpenter as Deb in Dexter is constantly robbed is because (my friend’s theory) she is so good and convincing as Deb there is very little traace of “acting” going on. She completely inhabits the role and the voting body probably thinks that’s her in real life.

    Helped:
    Avatar, obviously
Inglourious Basterds, which can no longer be denied as a serious contender

    It’s Complicated
    Sandra Bullock
    Michael Stuhlbarg

    Hurt:
    Jeremy Renner
    Alec Baldwin
Mariah Carey (any heat at all is gone now)
    The Lovely Bones
    Judi Dench
    Saoirse Ronan
    A Serious Man
    Samantha Morton

    Weird, isolated incidents:
    Tobey Maguire
    RDJ
    Emily Blunt
    That fucking hateful Avatar song

@ 76 Marshall1: Totally agree with you on Jennifer Carpenter. Her acting, especially the break down after Lundy (as mentioned above) gets shot was desperately brilliant and brave … it left me breathless with my jaw on the floor. I think a lot of people find her character very off-putting b/c she (the character) is so brash and offensive that it makes the viewer very uncomfortable to watch her or even sympathize with her.

YES!!! I LOVE the “Baaria” nomination! Such a stunning film! I also love to see “Broken Embraces” being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film!

I think Avatar and Nine will win the Best Picture awards.

That’s exactly why I love Deb–she’s so in-your-face, and Carpenter place her with complete selflessness.

@SHAAAARK: I don’t think Renner is hurt (teehee) much, nor is Stuhlbarg helped. Renner makes me think of Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins, Laura Linney, Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams–you see where I’m going with this? He’s that indie performance that is wrongfully snubbed for a bigger name. SAG will be the real tell….And they better not rob him =(.

@Me.: I think Up in the Air will be winning–most nominations rule and all. (Last year was an anomaly. Before that, it was Atonement, Babel, Brokeback Mountain, The Aviator, TLOTR:TROTK, and so forth. Granted, like last year, there’s potential for an upset, but I would consider that the frontrunner for the win.

I am LOVING the Julia Roberts nomination. People complaining about it a) haven’t seen “Duplicity” and really should do so pronto or b) just don’t like her, ala Sandra Bullock. She’s fantastic in the film.

Also loving the score nom for “The Informant!” So hope that goes to Oscar as well.

Generally everything else is as expected. Disappointed for “Bright Star” though. That Best Supporting Actress lineup sure looks like it’ll go unchanged for Oscar, doesn’t it?

Oh! That Emily Blunt nomination is freakin’ lazy! I figure the HFPA members fell asleep during “Young Victoria” and put her name down anyway because she’s Emily Blunt and she’s always good. ‘cept she’s not here.

I have been lucky enough to see most of the films released this year (save Avatar), and this is how I think it’s going to go down at the Oscars:

    BEST PICTURE
    (500) Days of Summer
    An Education
    The Hurt Locker
    Inglourious Basterds
    The Messenger
    Nine
    Precious
    A Serious Man
    Up in the Air
    Up

    BEST DIRECTOR
    Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
    Lee Daniels, Precious
    Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
    Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

*I understand I didn’t place Invictus into the Top 10, but I have a feeling the Academy will reward Eastwood with a nomination this year, to make up for not nominating either of his two films last year.

    BEST ACTOR
    Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
    Colin Firth, A Single Man
    Morgan Freeman, Invictus
    Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker

    BEST ACTRESS
    Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
    Carey Mulligan, An Education
    Saoirse Ronan, The Lovely Bones
    Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
    Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

*Despite all of the buzz, I still do not believe the Academy will reward Sandra Bullock with a nomination.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
    Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Cristian McKay, Me and Orson Welles
    Alfred Molina, An Education
    Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
    Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
    Mo’Nique, Precious
    Julianne Moore, A Single Man
    Samantha Morton, The Messenger

    BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
    (500) Days of Summer
    The Hurt Locker
    Inglourious Basterds
    A Serious Man
    Up

    BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
    An Education
    District 9

    A Single Man
    Up in the Air
