‘Fish Tank’ trailer

Written by

I caught Andrea Arnold’s “Fish Tank” during last year’s AFI Fest and frankly, wasn’t overly impressed by it.  Katie Jarvis is a real find and, of course, Michael Fassbender is and has been going places.  I liked the world it evokes feels very authentic and on the whole, it’s nice to have diversity in the marketplace.  But I just hated the narrative trajectory of the piece and whatever confused ideas it thought it was putting forth.

But, hey, you know what they say about opinions.  Guy (who didn’t base his list on U.S. release dates) thinks it is one of the year’s very best films.

Anyway, the domestic trailer has landed via Apple.  Have a look below:

Why is that trailer 1.85? When I saw it at TIFF it was 1:33. Does anyone know if it’s been changed?

    This looks awful.

I thought the same about the aspect ratio. It’s uk cinema release was 1:33 and so is the DVD I’ve just received the review copy of. At the Q&A at the Encounters Featival in Bristol, Arnold said she shot it fullscreen to capture how people living in these estates feel and view the world. Boxed in by tall apartment buildings. To give the idea of Mia being trapped, constrained…

My favourite of 2009, but this is one of the worst trailers I’ve seen in some time.

Don’t be fooled by the trailer – it is a really good movie though the last act was slightly contrived.
Jarvis imho really did give one of the best performances of 2009.
BTW I have to say I do not understand the US Precious comparison.

Can’t wait to catch this via IFC in Theaters on Demand in a few weeks, heard good things (with Guy, leading the charge).

Looks good. IFC on Demand is right.

Fassbender would make an excellent James Bond, no?

I agree, the trailer kinda sucks but I’m with Guy — this was one of the best movies of the year, no doubt. Jarvis and Fassbender were both excellent.

Fassbender is overrated in this. That little girl and the mother were brilliant though.

I really like the cinematography too.

Definitely one of the best of the year, Jarvis and Fassbender are both my wins for last year and have a good shot at staying them. Awful trailer unfortunately but its an excellent film.

I’m also in agreement with Guy, this is one of my top 3 of the year. However, that was an awful trailer, I hope it doesn’t discourage anyone from checking it out.

Absolutely brilliant film – my #2 of the year – and the trailer is kinda garbage. This movie is NOT a “coming of age” film and not sure why they’re marketing it as such.

And, yes, when I saw it at a film fest last year it was in 1:33.

One of my favourite films of last year. Arnold draws out incredible performances from all of cast and, as in her previous film Red Road, fills out her characters making you see them in different ways throughout the film. You can go from liking a character one minute to hating them the next, then feeling sorry for them. I might even go as far as to say that she is rivalling Ken Loach and Mike Leigh when it comes to gritty British dramas

Did this movie get a qualifying run in L.A. for Oscar eligibility? Or will the U.S. release qualify it for next year? I didn’t see it on the eligibility list that was floating around, so I figured it’s next year.

I know it has no chance either way, I’m just curious.

Liz, it never got a 2009 release of any kind.

EmsF, see the film might be “gritty” but I think it does an incredibly disservice to the film to imply that it’s just more lower class council estate miserablism. Arnold gives that girl so much and the scene towards the end with the audition? Could have easily been done at her expense, and I’m so grateful Arnold played it differently. It helped define that movie as the amazing piece of cinema that is.
