Last year we tried out AwardsPicks.com‘s Oscar pool and it went well enough, so we’re going back to the well once again this year.
I’ve altered the scoring system to give more weight to categories that are perceived as a bit more difficult to project. The winner gets a ton of swag that I’ve accumulated over the year. Too much stuff to name, but off the top of my head there are the scripts for “(500) Days of Summer,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Julie & Julia” and “Up,” T-shirts featuring “Star Trek” and “A Christmas Carol,” a handsome behind-the-scenes of “Amelia” hardcover book and a big “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” hardcover with production stills and the script inside.
Lots of goodies. Head on over to our group’s main page and join it if you haven’t already done so, then join the 2010 Academy Awards game, then click “make picks” and you’re set!

kris, replace up with transformers in the sound categories :)
no kris dont do that, replace transformers with up in one sound category
Ay, ay, ay, thanks.
I don’t think the shorts should be 8 points. No offense to their creators, but they hold much less significance than the rest of the field, and I will guarantee the winners will have just gotten lucky with them.
Meh.
Maybe I’ll change it. Opinions?
Can we keep changing our picks, or are they final once we enter them??
Also, Kris, will you be doing any pieces on the various short film categories so we can make more informed, educated picks??
No, the shorts are worth substantial points. There is a logic to predicting them, but they’re not easy either.
I’m in. It’s going to be fun .:)
Kris, the pool says that “A Prophet” is from Italy, not France.
I think every award should be worth the same amount of points
Obviously its harder to pick the shorts and some technicals more than actors, directors and picture but by making the shorts 8 points we are essentially saying whoever guesses the shorts correct automatically wins the game.
If you think about it whoever guesses the shorts will win even at even points because we will pretty much all choose the obvious in the big categories.
The shorts are and have always been a tie breaker in this game so there is no need to give them any added weight. Especially since none of us have seen them.
david: You can change as often as you want until they are locked in by the AwardsPicks site on March 7. And yeah, I’ll likely feature the shorts in posts once again this year.
Liz: That’s their error, not mine. I assume it’ll be corrected at some point.
More opinions on the voting system and scale, please. I want to make sure everyone agrees that it’s fair.
Also that link for the group page is not working for me. It says restricted?
Matthew – You have to go to join a public group on the home page and look for Incontention. I had the same problem as you.
Also, I agree with Matthew. By making the shorts worth so many points, whoever guesses them all correctly will win. And most people will be totally guessing on shorts.
They should be weighted a little bit for the reasons that Guy pointed out, but 8 points is too much.
I agree with the shorts six points, sure, but not eight.
With the exception of Kris & Guy it’s guesses on our part.
Just wanted to let you know I fixed the issue with “A Prophet”. It now correctly says it’s from France. If anyone has technical issues with the site, then please contact me at phil@awardspicks.com.
8 points for what could only be lucky guesses on the shorts yet correctly predicting a surprise upset in the supporting cats would only yield 2? this is not right…
