Oliver Stone on Bill Maher

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:17 pm · October 11th, 2008

Boy, Oliver Stone is a terrible television interview.  Don’t get me wrong, I could listen to him wax on all day long.  He’s usually at his best when he taps into that weird, oblivious monologue (listen to the director’s commentary of “JFK” for thorough evidence of this).  But anyway, it’s nice to see him out there peddling “W.” at the right places, namely, “Real Time with Bill Maher.”  The best bit is when he says Bush “probably would have died” if he went to Vietnam.

I usually like to hear him talk. I laughed at the “well, frankly he prob. would’ve died” comment.

I’m amazed that Stone managed to ready this movie given the window of opportunity that was given him and I can’t wait to see it by myself.

You should check out his appearance on the Colbert Report. I know you’re not a big fan of the show, but Stone actually did something kind of brilliant in his interview. He basically agreed with everything Colbert said while remaining in a pitch perfect deadpan.

A very good interview, I thought. Not funny, really, but thought-provoking. I’m wondering now if Brolin really is going to get in the actor race with his performance. This, coupled with his Milk perf and his showing last year in NCFOM, as you all well know, could get him in there. It very well might be a done deal.

I doubt Josh Brolin will ever be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. Just because you give good performances in great films doesn’t guarantee you’ll be nominated. Brolin’s not getting a career achievement nomination anytime soon, and he doesn’t have the emotional range to be noticed by the Academy.

Stone’s DVD commentaries are always fascinating. His mind seems to go a hundred miles a minute. His rambling monologues are reminiscent of his best films, actually.

Stone’s monumental monologue in the JFK commentary track is particularly impressive: he spends pretty much the whole three and a half hours speaking non-stop, pointing out flaws, fabrications and facts, conceding a point to his critics here, passionately defending his claims there, railing against the small-minded pundits who attacked him, praising his actors and crew, generally just passionately re-living the moods and ideas that went into the filmmaking progress.
