I had heard earlier this week that John Hillcoat’s “The Road” might be pushed to 2009, but was sworn to secrecy. Well, Dave Karger is talking about it now, so I guess it’s fair game.
The film isn’t finished (not that that has stopped The Weinstein Company from releasing a film in 2008), but Karger nails it: Viggo Mortensen is the real loser here. A few weeks back, he seemed to be a formidable contender with three big films in the pipeline. With lukewarm receptions for “Appaloosa” and “Good” dousing spirits for those poerformances, a shove to 2009 for “The Road” would likely eliminate him altogether.
Ah, the ever-shifting nature of an Oscar season.

Dammit. I’ve been waiting for this all year. Recently, I’ve been checking the site everyday for its trailer. Oh well.

Shame.
I was hopeful that this would be the “Juno” this year — sneaking up on about everyone and being the winner.
Not so, apparently.

AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i’ve literately been praying for a trailer and viggo was the person that i’ve been hoping would get the oscar for this. plus the book is one my favorites and i’ve been waiting for this for a year. maybe viggo might have a better chance at the oscar next year in less crowded race… maybe.

Yeah, I had a feeling about this — the fact that The Weinstein Company was so desperate to get “The Reader” out suggested to me that something was up with “The Road.”
My guess is, finished or not, it’s probably going to be an oblique, low-key affair like Hillcoat’s other work — possibly very good, but not necessarily Oscar-bait.

Shame on TWC.This is the film they should be pushing for. Leave The Reader for 2009, not this one.
But I agree with Aaron…He might get a better chance next year.

What? “The Reader” is directed by Stephen Daldry, who has directed two of the greatest and most satisfying films of the decade, “Billy Elliot” and “The Hours.” Anyone who can make such perfect, finely tuned film is someone I have complete and utter trust in. “The Reader” can be nothing but wonderful.

Too bad it wasn’t Frost/Nixon getting bumped.

I was going to say what Guy said. The fact that the Weinsteins were so desperate to get “The Reader” into 2009 probably implies they have a suspicion “The Road” won’t be finished. They have “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” though, which is assured at least one (mostly likely two) high profile nods so they can console themselves with that if “The Reader” doesn’t quite work out as planned.
Also, no poster or trailer with only a month until release?

This is a major-league fuckin’ bummer. Hillcoat’s The Proposition was a masterpiece and I was primed to see The Road. Oh well, good things come to those who wait I guess…
