After Ben Affleck’s directorial debut “Gone Baby Gone,” his latest, “The Town,” doesn’t seem like much of a stretch creatively. But nevertheless, this looks like it could be a nice late-summer pulse-pounder (along with Anton Corbijn’s “The American”) to clear the palette before the sincere awards fare hits in the fall. Or maybe Warner Bros. has some Oscar hopes lurking with a performance or two? Probably not, but Affleck will also be visible in the Weinsteins’ “The Company Men,” so he’s doubling down. I liked it. Early word is that the film doesn’t live up to the trailer though. Apparently, the romance between Affleck and Hall falls on its face (with one reviewer claiming that they began texting whenever their scenes were shown) but Renner and Lively, who play siblings, give solid performances.
This looks awesome.
I think it might not be too much of a stretch creatively, but he’s got the added responsibility of directing himself at the very least.
Too bad the trailer is ashamed to say he directed Gone Baby Gone.
When I mean “liked it”, I mean the trailer, not the film
I was just wondering when a trailer for this would come out last night! Looks good, I hope the actual film can deliver.
BTW (totally off-topic) Kris, have you heard the news of Jennifer Lawrence being cast as Mystique in X-men: First Class?
Ugh.
Looks goood. Hope it lives up to the promise on show here.
From the studio that brought me The Departed? Like that is going to have any effect on how good of a movie The Town is? What do they take us for?
The book is fantastic, I’ll say that much. Also kinda weird; this is the second movie of the year I was really looking forward to that I had no idea Pete Postlethwaite was in (“Inception” was the other, natch.)
Oh and as for X-Men. Why is all this talent attaching themselves to that movie? The likes of McAvoy, Fassbender, Hoult, Lawrence and Aaron Johnson surely have some solid roles available for them elsewhere. They all must feel like this is going to work somehow. Say what you want but right now, on paper, the cast for X-Men is better than The Avengers.
Feels like the trailer is more focused on the action than I would imagine the film as a whole is, which is always a shame if people end up feeling mislead by the trailer. Then again, maybe it’s more action-oriented than I’m expecting, but the scenes in-between give the appearance that it’s more of a drama than action/thriller.
Once again, it looks like the whole movie is revealed in the trailer.
I groaned when it was revealed that Ben was one of the masked guys. Up to that point, it looked like he was one trying to figure out who those guys were.
@ Kris: “Ugh?” You do realize that Mystique was the (pretty much) naked one, right?
Had it in my head after about 30 seconds that Affleck was probably one of the masked robbers. Still surprised to see it revealed in the trailer though. Suggests to me that this will be obvious to the audience watching the movie from early on and not a pivotal plot point.
It’ll be nice to see Hamm in a movie longer than a cameo (A-Team, Single Man). Of course with Mad Men around the corner and a rumor that he will star in a Jonah Nolan led Superman we’ll see a lot more of Mr. Draper.
Yeah, I think the revelation is not meant to shock the audience, but rather the suspense will be when Hall realized who Affleck really is.
I’m looking forward to this, and I like the fact that Affleck has chosen to focus more on the opposite side of the law for his sophomore feature. Still, maybe he should attempt to get that film adaptation of Take Me Out up and running, eh?
Oh, and it’s terrific seeing Renner in a promising role to follow-up The Hurt Locker, and Lively looks impressive in what will surely help her break away from CW. (She and Ed Westwick are the only two I see evolving and going places, that interest me anyway.)
And Chris Cooper seems to be having a fine year co-starring alongside Affleck. Perhaps either this or, more likely, The Company Men will net him that second Oscar nod.
Looks good, but I can already see how odd this romance between dignified Rebecca and street thug Ben is going to be. In the trailer alone, she seems to have more chemistry with Hamm…is this a love triangle?
