From a recent post at EW’s Oscar Watch:
I thought the sequence involving the two ferries (in which a group of commuters and a group of convicts have the power to blow up each others’ boats but don’t) was a bit too reality-show-ish for my taste. But I know most viewers loved it. Either way, that part of the film speaks to the innate goodness of human behavior. And let’s remember that Oscar ballots are due next January 12, just a week before Barack Obama is inaugurated. It’s safe to say most Hollywood types will also see that event as an example of innate human goodness. All of this only helps The Dark Knight’s chances, don’t you think?
Hm. Nice point. But the Best Picture chances of “The Dark Knight” are still extremely dependent, as David Poland noted today, on how films like “Revolutionary Road,” “Australia” and “The Reader” pan out. If those films start to fall by the wayside, then we can REALLY start getting serious.

Blech. A year like 2007, with at least 10 superior films, would have never welcomed this picture in for the top prize. I’m sceptical this year will either.

Where is this logic coming from? Hmm, what to vote for? Hey Obama’s on the news. That reminds me of the boat scene in The Dark Knight. Well, there’s my answer!
Even if they make the stretch to connect an all-Obama news blitz with innate human goodness, is The Dark Knight really the only film released this year with an example of it? Karger is out of his tree.

How is the election of Barack Obama a sign of human/American’s “Inate Goodness?” So I guess I have no goodness in me if I voted for John McCain? That is such a twisted, biases, anti-american thing to say. The Dark Knight comparison to Obama’s win is almost unthinkably inane.

This is just stupid. From any angle. If Dark Knight wins, it’s simply because it’s good enough.
Don’t mean to be crass, but not EVERYTHING was changed by Obama’s win. Like, what will win Best Picture, for instance. That’s stretching it beyond the point of sanity.

This is really stretching for ANY relevance whatsoever.
And besides, even fans of the movie seem to point to the ferry sequence as being the weakest part of the movie.

Although, Glenn, the phrase “weakest part of the movie” is funny. The ferry sequence is still powerful, even if it isn’t the best thing in the movie, you know?
