Película negra

I’m sure many of you by now have seen the gorgeous European poster artwork for Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming “Broken Embraces,” in all its lurid Warholian variations. (If you haven’t, Nat Rogers has the lot here.)

Now, even more enticingly, we have the first full-length Spanish trailer for the film, an expansion of sorts of the enigmatic teaser that was revealed a few weeks ago. Obviously, it comes without English subtitles, and I’m afraid my college-boy Spanish is not what it was a few years ago, so I still have only a vague grasp of what it’s all about. Fine by me … when I’m looking forward to a film as much as this one, I prefer to remain as unspoiled as possible.

Regardless, the trailer appears to confirm suspicions that this is a return for the master to the cruel, contemporary noir territory of “Live Flesh” and “Bad Education” — which might come as a relief to those, like me, who found “Volver,” for all its candy-coloured beauty, a little fey for its own good. As it stands, the pristine femme fatale styling of Penelope Cruz, and the popping hues of Rodrigo Prieto’s apparently luscious lensing, immediately call to mind John M. Stahl’s dayglo melodrama/noir/kitsch hybrid “Leave Her to Heaven.”

Which is fine by me. But that’s just going on appearances. The Spanish, of course, get to find out on March 18. The rest of us have rather longer to wait.

I’m so looking forward to this. The trailer doesn’t give anything away I think, which makes it all the more interesting.

    Translation:

    - Stop that!
    - where are you going?
    - I’m leaving you Ernesto.

    (broken embraces)

    - please, listen..
    - I don’t know what you’ve been talking about these days. but I do know what I haven’t told you in all these years.

    (score)

    - It’s a trap to make you go back. The add only lacks a “wanted” headline.
    - And what are we going to do?

    (broken embraces)

    - Mateo, Mateo.. tell me something.
    - Mateo is now dead.

(broken embraces a film by Almodovar)

Here’s a video from a lenghty report from a spanish tv program that aired last saturday here. It tells more about the plot and the different charactersand has some scenes too. Sorry, it’s spanish without subtitles. Press “reproducir”

    I hope it’s better than Bad education…

LOVE the score, LOVE the photography, LOVE the Cruz. Looks like yet another winner.

“un film de almodovar” is one of cinemas most comforting phrases.

I know Spanish and I still don’t know what the movie is about! LOL which honestly is fine by me! I hate when trailers give away too much plot!

    Yes…just yes.

That score, the shot of the red shoes, Penelope Cruz and her femme fatale characterization…

    I’m so glad Pedro’s back.

Totally looking forward to it, and I will be in Spain this April. So with any luck I’ll hopefully get a chance to see it there. If I can find a theatre that has english subtitles that is.

I’ve only seen four Pedro Almodovar films, and I’ve loved all four (Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios, Todo Sobre Mi Madre, Hable con Ella and Volver), and this trailer looks amazing (I speak Spanish, but I still couldn’t figure out what it was about). It looks to have Almodovar’s color, energy, idiosyncrasy and understanding of female characters. I love it.
I’ll be hunting down more Almodovar films hopefully soon, because I think the man is a genious.

Los abrazos rotos is going to be the most epic and glorious film this year. The music takes you there like that!

    Pedro can do no wrong.

The spanish actor Ruben Ochandiano could be a breakthrough this year with his roles in Broken Embraces and mostly in IГ±arrituВґs Biutiful.
