Almodovar, Campion, Lee in Cannes lineup

Abbie Cornish in Jane Campion's Bright StarThe official list of films competiting for the Palme d’Or at next month’s Cannes Film Festival is out, and while it’s not a very surprising list — it’s been a given for some time that “Inglourious Basterds,” “Broken Embraces” and “Antichrist,” among others, would be in the mix — it still an exciting one, packed to the gills with auteur works from both regular visitors (Michael Haneke, Ken Loach) and long-absent ones (Jane Campion, Alain Resnais).

I’ll dig into the selection in more depth later, but for now, here’s the list:

“Broken Embraces” (Pedro Almodovar)
“Fish Tank” (Andrea Arnold)
“Un Prophete” (Jacques Audiard)
“Vicenre” (Marco Bellocchio)
“Bright Star” (Jane Campion)
“A L’Origine” (Xavier Giannoli)
“Map of the Sounds of Tokyo” (Isabel Coixet)
“The White Ribbon” (Michael Haneke)
“Taking Woodstock” (Ang Lee)
“Looking for Eric” (Ken Loach)
“Spring Fever” (Lou Ye)
“Kinatay” (Brillante Mendoza)
“Enter The Void” (Gaspar Noe)
“Thirst” (Park Chan-Wook)
“Les Herbes Folles” (Alain Resnais)
“The Time That Remains” (Elia Suleiman)
“Inglourious Basterds” (Quentin Tarantino)
“Vengeance” (Johnnie To)
“Face” (Tsai Ming-liang)
“Antichrist” (Lars Von Trier)

I would give up all of my movie watching for the year for a chance to go to Cannes. Waiting more than a year for limited releases and DVD’s is not fun.

I can’t really get excited about that lineup. I hate Tarantino and Park Chan-Wook. I dislike Almodovar, Resnais and Campion. Haneke is too hit and miss. Taking Woodstock looks like a total snooze.

Really, Looking for Eric and AntiChrist are the only two currently on my must-see list but maybe some will surprise me.

I’m stoked for the new Gaspoer Noe flick, AntiChrist and the Almodovar. Right at the top.

Not counting the Almodovar (because it’s a more known commodity at this point), the Audiard and the Campion are top of my list. I’d be more excited for the Haneke if he were working with actors I’m more familiar with — for me, his best films actually tend to revolve around major star personas.

Good lineup, I am stoked for Broken Embraces , Antichrist and Taking Woodstock more than the rest. I can’t wait to see what Peneloe Cruz, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Demetri Martin will do in their respective films.

I wish there was a bit less of a “Cannes invites their best friends” over vibe to this years festival. You’re not going to find the next Quentin Tarantino by simply inviting Quentin Tarantino every time he so much as walks behind a rolling camera (and I say that as a huge fan of QT who hasn’t given anything of his less than an A-, including “Death Proof”).

Apart from the usual suspects (QT, Lee, Campion, Almodovar, Von Trier, Coixet) Andrea Arnold’s “Red Road” was amazing so I’m looking forward to her movie, as well as “Face”.

Such a shame that “Samson and Delilah” didn’t get into the main competition. There was your winner right there, but they had to boot it out in favour of “Taking Woodstock”, which looks great but hardly a festival title.
