Wow, there is quite literally nothing worth discussing today.  This has been a pretty eventless two-week spread, actually.  I have no interest in writing about the baseless “G.I. Joe” speculation.  Nothing to offer the “Taking of Pelham 123” discussion because I’ve yet to make my way to a screening.  Nothing to say about the limited releases that I haven’t already said.  Nothing to say about “Ponyo,” which I saw earlier in the week, until LAFF amps up.

Nothing.  Just the healthy anticipation for the approaching fest, an upcoming look at “Public Enemies” and finally running an interview piece with Denis Leary that was a Santa Monica delight last week (even though we don’t cover TV — but I couldn’t resist an hour with the man).

Call this an open thread to discuss what you will.  I got…nothing.

Pumped about LA Film Fest. I heard it straight from the programmer that Calimucho is a must see. Still Walking, Harmony & Me and 35 Shot of Rum are also high on my list.

Is Ponyo among Miyazaki’s better films, in your opinion??

Miyazaki doesn’t work for me, so I’m not the guy to ask about his “better films.” But I think even fans of this one wouldn’t call it top tier. Quite…Playschool, shall we say.

Here’s an idea to prompt lively talkback…

As we have just over 6 months left in the decade, what do you currently consider to be the 10 Best of the 00’s?

(Granted, this will be more fitting at the END of the year, however, it will help in whittling down the selection to a handful of films the consensus feels are worthy…. aaaaaand I’m bored :-D )

Have been getting myself caught up on the move news from last couple of days. And an (possible) adaptation of “Too Cool to be Forgotten” totally takes the cake. Truly something, which has potential to be pretty damn amazing.

You’ll hear a lot more from us on that topic in a few months’ time, Gareth. Have patience ;)

I must say Im curious to see how Taking of Pelham 123 performs at the box-office considering its an R-rated action thriller. The R-rated action movie is becoming a scarce commodity nowadays with Terminator Salvation and Live Free or Die Hard released PG-13. There previous entries were rated R.
I saw the original at a movie theater in New York in 1974 as it played as a double feature. The other movie was “Juggernaut”. I was very, very young (parents took me) but still remember that classic third rail scene with Robert Shaw.
Personally I love the original Pelham film as I think it was is one of the very best of that decade. While I know this won’t be as good I’m actually looking forward to seeing it. Hey Denzel is Denzel, he’s always good.

Kris, I can’t seem to find any of your top 10 films list for any year besides 2008. Are there more besides 2008?

Who here wants to take a stab at the opening weekend gross for Public Enemies? I don’t have a damn clue. Marketing seems fine. Universal has been running t.v. spots on Comedy Central during Colbert’s show in Iraq. I’m sure they’ve been playing elsewhere, too. Depp and Bale and guns…will it stick?

David: 2005 (from the old Blogger site), 2006 (classic IC), 2007 (classic IC) and 2008 are the only ones you can see online at this time. I used to write for Sasha at Oscarwatch (now Awards Daily), which is where my lists from 2003 and 2004 appeared. But Sasha keeps her site trimmed and I don’t think they’re available anywhere anymore. A shrewd web searcher might be able to turn up the 2001 and 2002 lists from the old (OLD) Oscar Central days. That’s the extent of my online presence where best-of lists are concerned, however.

Mind you: Films and their impact change over time. Just as Ebert called “The Black Stallion” the best film of 1980 and later paradoxically deemed “Raging Bull” the best film of the decade, I expect some revisionism to go down in a few months on my part.

I think I’m going to switch up the top 10 list format this year, too. Been doing it this way for five years (going back to the 2004 list that appeared at OW), and I quite like it. But I think it’s time for something new.

Kris: Totally understandable, people’s taste can change during a decade of film. Like you, I remember that Ebert example vividly because if you look at all his top 10 lists you can see that his own opinions have changed.

I’m pretty anxious to see all these top 10 films of the decade lists at the end of the year and I’m sure you will have to do some heavy thinking on that part.

Kris, do you think “9″ might have a legitimate shot at an animated feature nomination??

Is it getting any kind of buzz yet, good or bad??

david: Sure but it’ll be tough for Focus to get two when Disney will be trying to pull the same trick.

Speaking of animated films, Kris, do you think there will be five nominees this year? It seems like there are plenty of options. I see that you’ve only picked three to be nominated, but on the next predictions revision, would you consider adding two more? Maybe mark the additions with an asterisk or something?

I think there are only 15 films on my radar, which is one short of the arbitrary 16 number. G-Force isn’t animated and won’t qualify like I once thought it would. So we’re probably looking at three nominees.
