Wow. That’s really different. Reminds me of a Czech or Polish poster.
The “faceless black girl” thing is really strong.

I liked the last one, but the layout and typography wasn’t as well thought out as its central image. This is completely integrated, and blows the last one out of the water. Stunning.

A 2-second internet search will tell you it’s Imes.
Apart from the fact that her single moniker upsets the balance of the typesetting, why do you want to know? ;)

This is the type of stuff I’d expect to find on a Criterion DVD cover, not a movie poster. Stunning.

Where the wild things are and Precious do seem to be winning the poster war this year, I think i d be in favor of where the wild things are, but there both stunning in their own way. Shutter Island poster was a bit of a fail and the Lovely Bones poster was laughable, doubtful its real though, UP didnt have a great poster either, but great posters dont equal great movies

I think that Precious will be the Slumdog Millionaire of this year:fresh, new and intense.

love it.
I agree that they’ll win the war in a tight race with Where the Wild Things Are.
I too hate performers and their single names screwing up the credits but whatever…
My only criticism is that I think the poster needs the title “PRECIOUS” between the hands and the “a novel by” just so people know what the title is. Just a fat Helvetica in white, the same size as “Coming Soon”.
It’s an indie movie and the necklace might not be enough, Oprah will sure promote the hell out of it, but people might not know, even if it looks excellent.

The placing of the title is the whole genius of the poster, in my opinion.

They should totally create an Oscar for Best Poster! We need more awesome artwork like this.

If I didn’t know the name of this movie beforehand I’d be very, very confused. The title is way too small.

You wouldn’t be able to make an educated guess considering the fact that “Precious” is the brightest element of the poster?

Besides the obvious awards contention of the film, with all of the buzz it has, I can see “Precious” being a huge box office hit as well. With these elements: Tyler Perry, Oprah, Monique’s much-praised performance, possible-Oscar contention…I see “Precious” out-grossing all expectations, maybe scoring between 70- 100 million at the B.O. this November. It has a populist, broad-reaching appeal (despite the heavy topics) that will attract youth, middle-aged, and elderly across color lines. The only demographic I see it not naturally appealing to is white males (and all males to an extent).
Obviously I don’t have it down to a science, but I have a hunch.

I agree: critical acclaim, audience favorite/box office, support from big-name people, etc.
It will become a serious contender for BP after nominations are announced.
Then the backlash will ensue.

I dunno, once a film accrues said criteria, then it can endure whatever backlash pretty well, “Slumdog Millionaire” being a case in point. Not to jinx it, but things are aligning pretty well for “Precious”, and a brilliant marketing team can only help; the poster is stunning.
