  • Matt Damon: A-list character actor

Matt DamonOver the weekend you heard Anne and I discuss Matt Damon’s Oscar prospects this year for his two films, Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus” (where he’ll be looking to land a supporting actor nomination) and Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant!” (lead).  Anne isn’t in the minority when she says the latter has faded somewhat from the canvas and that Damon is looking less likely for a notice there, but I remain fairly certain that he’ll be remembered for what is, many will agree, his finest work to date.

Of the year’s potential double-dippers, Damon has perhaps remained the most likely to see two nominations, and he’ll be right back on the scene a week after the Oscarcast when Paul Greengrass’s “Green Zone” hits theaters nationwide.  The guy is busy, as always, and what makes him special is he is incredibly consistent.

So it’s not that surprising that the Grey Lady would dedicate a lengthy piece to the actor and his place in modern Hollywood, having forged a career as what the editors and/or writer Dennis Lim are cleverly dubbing an “A-list character actor.”

  • Catching up with Ari Gold, er, Emanuel

Ari EmanuelIt’s exciting times in my house these days, what with “Entourage” hitting the small screen for season number six Sunday night.  The series makes for my weekly dose of Hollywood escapism, paradoxically right here at ground zero.  The obsession is, of course, owed in no small part to Jeremy Piven’s Emmy-winning portrayal of super agent Ari Gold, a composite sketch of real life player Ari Emanuel.

Emanuel has been getting plenty of media attention lately (well, more than his usual helathy dose of press limelight).  The merger of his Endeavor agency with William Morris a few months ago (forming mega-conglomerate WME) led to a front-page New York Times profile last month, chocked full of the usual array of anonymous sources and, it should figure, no comment from Emanuel.  And now in the pages of London’s Independent newspaper (a number of weeks behind the curve) comes a new look at the Hollywood maestro.

  • “The cock-sucking writers strike brought us here.”

Is it just me or did tonight’s episode of “Entourage” totally kick ass?  I think it might’ve been the best of the series so far, tapping into more and more depth after hinting at some more dramatic hues a few weeks ago (the episode with the Radiohead play-out).  Jeremy Piven is doing his best work of the show thus far, almost becoming the heartbeat of the series.  And adding the talented Gary Cole to the miz will only bring good things.

Can’t believe there are only three episodes left.

  • Edward Norton and Vincent Chase in ‘Smoke Jumpers’

I don’t know if the readership is as in the tank for “Entourage” as I am.  It’s my half-hour fantasy session every Sunday.  For 30 minutes, I get to pretend I’m in “the life.”  Then it’s back to the day-to-day grind of a movie blogger, avoiding the bottle, fighting off suicidal tendencies and otherwise just hating myself constantly.

    Only kidding.  Kind of…

Anyway, if you’ve been watching this season, it seems a bidding war erupted over Vincent Chase’s latest project, the show runners once again getting Hollywood on the mark.  Edward Norton wants the script, “Smoke Jumpers,” while Ari, having finally read the script, wants it for Chase.  Eric, meanwhile, is caught in the middle, as his new “company” represents the backwoods writers of the script.  Tense stuff.  The last episode left us with the possibility of Chase taking the second role alongside Norton.

Which brings me to this impressive rendering of the “Smoke Jumpers” poster from the guys at ibored.  Impressive to me, anyway.  We’ve seen the height of my Photoshop prowess.

  • Slumber

Nothing from me today.  The most epic of football confrontations, year in and year out, happens at 1:15 p.m. PST and I have to be ready.  Okay, the most epic for a Redskins fan.

Meanwhile, talk amongst yourselves.  There are plenty of Newman obits out there but I find it sad to keep reading through them.  It’s also interesting that Pete Hammond has finally joined the Oscar blogging rat race after trying to make a column work at a couple of outlets the last few years.  We linked to his first item in yesterday’s round-up, which might or might not pan out.

Other possible talking points include the over-analysis of the debate (it was a fucking bore, let’s move on and never let Jim Lehrer near the gig again), last night’s latest Palin sketch (so should Fey just join the cast again instead of lurking in the buliding and being on the ready?), Halloween costumes (I heard the best idea the other day: nurse Joker) and the relative disappointment of most of the fall’s television series so far (The Shield, True Blood, Entourage — though The Office season opener was awesome).

    Have at it.
