It was a predictably great night for “Life of Pi” at tonight’s Visual Effects Society Awards as the film picked up four prizes, including the big daddy, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Motion Picture. Not only that, but as previously announced, the film’s director, Ang Lee, received the Society’s Visionary Award.

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:20 pm · February 5th, 2013
Chuck Hagel weathered quite the storm from his fellow Republicans during his confirmation hearing for Secretary of Defense. But part of the debate strewn about in those eight hours pertained to something very much at the fore of discussion in this year’s documentary feature race.

Tim Burton on Ray Harryhausen, stop-motion and the personal touch of 'Frankenweenie'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:02 pm · February 4th, 2013
The last time Tim Burton made the awards press rounds, he was a nominee for 2005’s “Corpse Bride.” Interestingly enough, after a few decades in the live action trenches carving out his own identity and aesthetic on the screen, it’s been only in the animation arena that Oscar has taken notice. He’s back again this year as a nominee for his most personal film in some time, “Frankenweenie.”

Believe it or not, there’s a bit of an Oscar angle to today’s big game. This year’s Super Bowl pits the San Francisco 49ers against the Baltimore Ravens, and on the offensive line of the latter, defending Joe Flacco’s blind side throughout the game, will be Michael Oher, subject of the 2009 Oscar-winning film “The Blind Side.”

'Wreck-It Ralph' wins big at 40th Annie Awards
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:57 pm · February 2nd, 2013
This year’s Annie Awards did a nice job of spreading out the wealth. “Brave,” “ParaNorman” and “Rise of the Guardians” all won multiple prizes. Indeed, the one film that seemed snubbed throughout was Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie.” But it was “Wreck-It Ralph” that ended up with the most prizes, including the award for Best Animated Feature.

I suppose it’s a bit of a surprise that the George Lucas-produced “Red Tails” beat out some stiff Oscar competition in Benh Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Robert Zemeckis’s “Flight,” so there it is.

Off the Carpet: Ang Lee's position in all of this
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:31 am · January 28th, 2013
Lately I’ve been curious about the Best Director race. With an “Argo” win would obviously come a split director decision (unless that write-in stuff finds traction). My instinct has been Steven Spielberg, because “Lincoln” is a hell of an accomplishment and even if I’m betting “Argo” will reap the benefits of the preferential ballot system (born out by its victory Saturday), it still makes sense for Spielberg to get some love. But what about Ang Lee?

'Argo' stuns for second-straight day this weekend at the SAG Awards
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:21 pm · January 27th, 2013
“Argo” is the story of the weekend, clearly. After coming out victorious at the PGA Awards it picked up the ensemble prize that everyone had either chalked up to “Lincoln” or “Silver Linings Playbook,” with some outliers thinking “Les Misérables” had a shot at it. Surprise!
