The Online Film Critics have jumped on the increasingly-strong “Argo” bandwagon and handed the film its Best Picture prize for 2012. Paul Thomas Anderson nabbed Best Director after his film, “The Master,” led the way with nominations. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also recognized for his work in the film. Daniel Day-Lewis and Jessica Chastain won top acting honors and Anne Hathaway picked up yet another prize for her performance in “Les Misérables.”

'Argo' wins with Houston film critics

After “Lincoln” led the way with nominations from the Houston Film Critics Society last month, it was “Argo” that took the prizes for Best Picture and Best Director. Steven Spielberg’s film did win Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Screenplay, while most other awards followed established canon. This is the seventh Best Film prize for “Argo” on the critics circuit so far, bringing it ever closer to the “Zero Dark Thirty” tally of eight.

'Moonrise Kingdom' wins big with Central Ohio film critics

Finally someone would like to shake things up a little bit again. The Central Ohio Film Critics Association has chosen Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” as the year’s best film, and not only that, but given it five awards, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score and Best Ensemble. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for “Lincoln” while Jennifer Lawrence took Best Actress for “Silver Linings Playbook.”

“Argo” won top honors with the Phoenix Film Critics Society, which announced nominees two weeks ago. Kathryn Bigelow took the Best Director prize for “Zero Dark Thirty,” however. Daniel Day-Lewis and Jessica Chastain took top acting honors, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anne Hathaway filling out the supporting ranks.

As members of the Academy hurry through the last screeners they need to see before committing an opinion on the year’s best (for those who bother trying to get as deep into the stack as possible, that is), a number of races hang in the balance as extremely tight categories are sure to leave a few contenders feeling the sting of “also-ran” on Thursday, January 10.

The Oklahoma Film Critics Association has also chimed in for “Argo” today, giving the film Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay honors. The Utah Film Critics Association has announced its 2012 winners, and, big surprise, “Zero Dark Thirty” took top honors. But the group went in a couple of different directions elsewhere, tapping Dwight Henry for Best Supporting Actor, Wes Anderson for Best Director and “Indie Game: The Movie” for best doc.

“Zero Dark Thirty” remains on top of the critics awards haul today with another Best Picture nod, this time from the Austin Film Critics Association. Oddly, though, the film won nothing else. “The Master” seemed to be more of a favorite, taking Best Director, Best Actor and Best Cinematography.
