The International Film Music Critics Association has offered up the final precursor awards announcement of the season as we head into the weekend, which will bring the Independent Spirit Awards and, finally, the Oscars. And John Williams had a great day, it turns out.

'The Artist' and the 'Vertigo' score: separating theft from tribute

The trumped-up non-controversy is a ritual that many Best Picture frontrunners go through at some point: cue Kim Novak accusing “The Artist” of “raping” the memory of “Vertigo” by sampling Bernard Herrmann’s famous score. But where she sees sees artistic theft, the filmmakers see artistic tribute.
