Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:51 pm · January 19th, 2012
The Iowa Film Critics have joined and drowned in the on-going chorus of year-end kudos-dishers. Drowned-in because it’s all just a blur now. “The Descendants” came out on top, winning both Best Picture and Best Director. And there’s Melissa McCarthy, yet again.

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:07 pm · January 10th, 2012
Ballots are in hand and the last push to this Friday’s poll deadline is tight and spirited. Now is the time when you cross your fingers for completely left-field picks from the Academy’s membership (most of which has likely already turned in its ballot by now), but mainly hope for some bubble contenders that are highly deserving to fall on the right side of the line come Tuesday, January 24.

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Michelle Williams and more turn out for Palm Springs awards gala
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:05 am · January 8th, 2012
I’ve never attended the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. It’s a key stop along the Oscar trail his time of year, very competitive with the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The two duke it out for honorees, one reticent to honor talent that the other has chalked up for an award. Which is obviously silly. But it seemed time to give it a go.

'Melancholia,' Dunst and Pitt among National Society of Film Critics winners
Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:30 pm · January 7th, 2012
The National Society of Film Critics can usually be relied upon to go their own way on the precursor trail, and they did so in emphatic fashion today, naming Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” the year’s best, and star Kirsten Dunst their Best Actress.

Who am I to complain about the amount of year-end kudos announcements when I had this post coming all along? I know. I’m so hypocritical.

Oscarweb Round-up: Clooney cheers on the competition
Posted by Guy Lodge · 8:20 am · November 16th, 2011
Ask most awards analysts who the current frontrunners for the Best Actor Oscar are, and you’ll probably get some combination of the names George Clooney, Jean Dujardin and Brad Pitt. Clooney probably knows that, which is why it’s both magnanimous and, who knows, perhaps slyly strategic for him to name Dujardin and Pitt’s performances, in […]

Oscarweb Round-up: Too much anal rape for Oscar?
Posted by Guy Lodge · 5:10 am · November 15th, 2011
After avoiding it scrupulously for months, as is my custom, I was finally faced with the trailer for David Fincher’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” when I paid good money to see “Immortals” last night. (More on that later.) Though the film looks as dourly impressive as I’d expect, any number of reasons why […]
