Alfonso Cuarón wins DGA prize for 'Gravity,' is Oscar next?

Surely coming as a surprise to precious few, “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón has just won the Directors Guild of America (DGA) prize for theatrical motion pictures. He beat out fellow Oscar nominees Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”), Martin Scorsese (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) and David O. Russell (“American Hustle”), as well as “Captain Phillips” helmer Paul Greengrass to land his first such honor from the guild.

With 10 nominations to date, Steven Spielberg came into today’s Directors Guild of America (DGA) announcement as the most honored director in the guild’s history. Well, make it 11, as the “Lincoln” director predictably made it one more with a notice for his $144 million-grossing (and climbing) epic.

DGA rescinds long-standing 'no screeners' policy

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced today that it will be reversing a long-standing policy outlawing the issuance of “for your consideration” screeners to its membership. The change will go into effect this awards season.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has announced this year’s slate of nominees for excellence in directing, and chalk another guild citation up for David Fincher, who somehow got in for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Also nominated was Woody Allen for “Midnight in Paris,” while Steven Spielberg and Tate Taylor were snubbed for Best Picture contenders “War Horse” and “The Help,” respectively.
