The American Society of Cinematographers has named the three cameramen who will receive honorary awards at February’s ASC ceremony. They include blockbuster DP Dean Cundey, a former Steven Spielberg collaborator, and two-time Oscar nominee Eduardo Serra.

The 38th annual Saturn Awards, recognizing achievement in genre filmmaking, were held this evening. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, ” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” won across the organization’s three Best Film categories. “Super 8” also picked up a pair of statues, including Best Director.

UK hits “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” were predictably the big winners at the reader-voted Jameson Empire Awards, but there was a surprise as Olivia Colman won Best Actress for the little-seen “Tyrannosaur.”

Oscar Guide 2011: Best Visual Effects

After gradually reducing finalists from fifteen to ten to five, the visual effects branch made room for four blockbusters this year – three of them from franchises – as well as the nominations leader. This is hardly the sort of lineup that could be considered shocking. Still, another Best Picture contender was left off, while the fourth entries in three other franchises came up short, as did one additional summer blockbuster.

This year’s list of International Film Music Critics Association nominees was predictably dominated by John Williams, who landed seven nominations across the various categories for his two Oscar-nominated scores: “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” Not too far back with five nods was “The Artist” composer Ludovic Bource.
