Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” led the way with nine nominations for the 39th annual Saturn Awards, recognizing the best in genre filmmaking. It picked up nods in the Best Fantasy Film and Best Director categories, among others. Not far behind were Ang Lee’s Oscar nominee “Life of Pi” with eight and Sam Mendes’s James Bon actioner “Skyfall” with seven.

'Cloud Atlas' fails to make the finalists for Best Makeup and Hairstyling

The Academy has announced its shortlist of seven Best Makeup and Hairstyling contenders. The films will proceed to the “bake-off” stage, where reels of the work put into the makeup and hairstyling effects will be screened for the branch and three nominees will be chosen, revealed alongside the rest of the Oscar nominations on January 10.

The awards-obsessive corners of the web were all abuzz this morning with murmurs of a supposed “leak” of the 19th annual SAG nominees. Intrepid net hounds had apparently gone into the guild’s website and done some choice searching to turn out what ended up being, indeed, the full list of nominees. Fox Searchlight Pictures had its annual east coast holiday party this evening at Andaz 5th Avenue in a nice second-floor spread with principals from the studio’s films — “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Hitchcock” and “The Sessions” — on hand. Spirits were particularly high after “Beasts” and “Sessions” combined for six Independent Spirit Award nominations (and one each for “Ruby Sparks” and “Sound of my Voice”).
