'Birdman' and usual critical darling suspects lead Houston critics' nominations

The Houston Film Critics Society has announced nominations, and no surprise, the three-horse race for critical darling of the year led the way: “Birdman” with 10, “Boyhood” with seven and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” with six.

'12 Years a Slave' wins four from Houston film critics

Also handing out awards today was the Houston Film Critics Society. The group also went with “12 Years a Slave,” bringing the film’s Best Picture tally up to six, for those keeping score at home. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sandra Bullock picked up top acting honors, while Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o maintained their impressive dominance in the supporting ranks.

'Argo' wins with Houston film critics

After “Lincoln” led the way with nominations from the Houston Film Critics Society last month, it was “Argo” that took the prizes for Best Picture and Best Director. Steven Spielberg’s film did win Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Screenplay, while most other awards followed established canon. This is the seventh Best Film prize for “Argo” on the critics circuit so far, bringing it ever closer to the “Zero Dark Thirty” tally of eight.
