Phyllida Lloyd’s “The Iron Lady” shares a lot in common with Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar.” They portray conservative figures in political history with broad strokes despite attempting to flesh them out as nuanced characters. But mostly, they serve as hindrances to performances that could have won Oscars in a cake-walk.

The Best Supporting Actor race is beginning to slowly take shape as a wide array of veteran actors, from Christopher Plummer to Nick Nolte, are leading the conversation. Nevertheless, it’s still a wide open race with a lot of room for movement.
