Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:01 pm · June 28th, 2013
This weekend Roland Emmerich’s “White House Down” hits theaters. While it’s a minor romp that will either delight you or cause you to roll your eyes out of your head, it reminds of that old staple of the cinema: the movie president.

Peggy Siegal on Oscar's build: Hathaway's Valentino snub, Clooney's Dujardin revenge
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:35 am · April 1st, 2013
I read Peggy Siegel’s Oscar weekend diary at The Huffington Post with the expected mixture of fascination and disgust. You find yourself smiling at the gluttony of Hollywood during awards season until you don’t, as the cup of excess runneth over. And Siegel’s diary is a perfect record of all that superficiality.

From 'Lincoln' to Cannes to 'Napoleon,' Steven Spielberg is everywhere lately
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:23 am · March 5th, 2013
Barely a week after his film “Lincoln” only managed two Oscars from 12 nominations and deferred to “Argo” on Best Picture honors, Steven Spielberg seems as ubiquitous as ever. Fresh off the Academy Awards he was announced as head of the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and he received a nice love letter in the New York Times last week pitting him as a sort of Godfather to Hollywood filmmakers. But it doesn’t end there.

Tech Support: 'Life of Pi' has a strong crafts showing at the Oscars

I’m writing this column, the last Tech Support entry for this 2012-2013 Oscar season, with a strange combination of ambivalence and a touch of the bittersweet. Despite the fun of awards season, and this one in particular, it is somewhat relieving to see it come to an end.

Joe Wright’s adaptation “Anna Karenina,” Tom Hooper’s musical “Les Misérables” and Steven Spielberg’s biopic “Lincoln” ended up splitting the awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Production Design.
