'Cloud Atlas,' 'Impossible,' 'Life of Pi,' 'Lincoln' lead International Film Music nominations
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:38 am · February 7th, 2013
Sometimes I feel like it would be helpful for the International Film Music Critics Association to release its list of nominees prior to the Oscar nominations. There is no real “precursor” to help understand what the music branch might be thinking. Then again, as evidenced by this year’s slate, maybe they wouldn’t be that helpful at all. A critics group’s choices are bound to differ from a group of composers’ choices, and so it has this year.

Oscar Guide 2013: Best Music – Original Score
Posted by gerardkennedy · 2:21 pm · February 4th, 2013
Best Original Score, are you ever predictable. This year’s nominees are not diverse in terms of being films not cited in other categories – Best Picture nominees took three of the spots, while the other two contenders are from films that have nine nominations between them. Also predictably, only one first-time nominee is in the mix. Diversity was nonetheless made up for in the nationalities of the composers (four countries represented) and the locales of the nominated films – the nominees are set on three different continents and the movies’ themes resulted in Russian, Indian and Persian influences, among others, on the music.

Off the Carpet: Ang Lee's position in all of this
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:31 am · January 28th, 2013
Lately I’ve been curious about the Best Director race. With an “Argo” win would obviously come a split director decision (unless that write-in stuff finds traction). My instinct has been Steven Spielberg, because “Lincoln” is a hell of an accomplishment and even if I’m betting “Argo” will reap the benefits of the preferential ballot system (born out by its victory Saturday), it still makes sense for Spielberg to get some love. But what about Ang Lee?

'Argo' stuns for second-straight day this weekend at the SAG Awards
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:21 pm · January 27th, 2013
“Argo” is the story of the weekend, clearly. After coming out victorious at the PGA Awards it picked up the ensemble prize that everyone had either chalked up to “Lincoln” or “Silver Linings Playbook,” with some outliers thinking “Les Misérables” had a shot at it. Surprise!

The USC Scripter Awards is celebrating its silver anniversary this year. And in this 25th year, the USC Libraries’ set of nominees is reflective of a very competitive year as, for the first time ever, a tie resulted in six nominees as opposed to the usual five.
