If you want a press release to land somewhat quietly, drop it at 10:00pm ET. And not that the news of “Foxcatcher” didn’t cause plenty of commotion a few hours ago, but it was obviously a willful decision from Sony Classics to let the news out when they did. I’ve been in screenings all day and just now got back to my desk to assess all of this, but the news is this: Bennett Miller’s latest is officially a 2014 release.

So on one hand, yeah, the headline here is a joke. The Screen Actors Guild’s nominating committee, and indeed, any self-respecting awards-giving body is highly unlikely to pass kudos approval on a film like “The Avengers.” But in the case of a category meant to honor well-oiled machines like this one, perhaps they should.

Kenneth Lonergan’s long-delayed sophomore “Margaret” has emerged from nightmarish post-production difficulties to emerge as one of the year’s very best films, but distributor Fox Searchlight isn’t even sending out awards screeners for the little-seen title. A critic-led online petition is hoping to change that.
